THE SAN JOSE GIANTS... begin a six-game homestand this evening with the first of three straight contests against the Stockton Ports at Municipal Stadium. The Giants rallied to secure a split of their four- game series at Visalia earning back-to-back wins of 9-6 on Thursday and 7-4 last night. In yesterday's game, Justin Fitzgerald struck out a career-high 11 and allowed just one run over six innings of work. Fitzgerald, who walked just one, took a no-hitter into the sixth inning. Drew Biery hit a key two-out, two-run homer in the top of the fourth while Jose Flores added a pair of hits and two RBI's.
Media Coverage... The entire series can be heard live on www.sjgiants.com with Joe Ritzo and Rocky Koplik calling all of the action. All 140 games this season will be aired on the club's official website.
Offense Returns... After dropping a season-high six straight, the Giants have won their last two games scoring a total of 16 runs on 26 hits in the two contests. Prior to the offensive outburst, San Jose had scored only 10 total runs in their previous five games (all losses).
Flores File... Infielder Jose Flores recorded two more hits in last night's game to raise his team-leading batting average to .331. Over his last 12 games, Flores is batting .458 (22-for-48) with three home runs (two grand slams) and 15 RBI's. Flores is currently 14 plate appearances shy of qualifying for the league-leaders in batting average. His .331 season average would rank third in the California League. The versatile player has started games at third base, shortstop, second base, left field and right field this season.
Home Games On Tap... Beginning tonight, the Giants will play 13 out of their final 17 regular season games at home. San Jose is only 7-15 at Municipal Stadium during the second half to drop their overall home record to under .500 (28-29).
San Jose Leads Division By Three Games... The Giants (67-56) possess a three-game lead over the Modesto Nuts (64-59) and Stockton Ports (64-59) for the top overall record in the North Division. Home field advantage (hosting Game Five) in the North Division Series will be awarded to the team with the best overall record that's won a half.
Giants-Ports Season Series... San Jose currently owns an 11-8 advantage over Stockton in the season series. In their last meeting, the Giants swept a three-game set from the visiting Ports (August 3-5), earning victories of 5-4, 5-4 and 6-3. San Jose is 6-3 against Stockton since the All-Star break - the only North Division opponent the Giants have an above .500 record against in the second half. Individually, Michael Sandoval (.478, 11-for-23, 2 RBI) and Johnny Monell (.339, 21- for-62, 4 HR, 15 RBI) have been the top performers against Ports pitching.
Stolen Base Leaders... The Giants have recorded 188 stolen bases this season - tops in the California League. They're currently seven steals in front of the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (181) for the league lead. Individually, Francisco Peguero (38, 3rd) and Ehire Adrianza (28, 4th) both rank among the top four in the league.
Peguero's Stellar Second Half... Outfielder Francisco Peguero is hitting at a .355 clip since the All-Star break - the top batting average on the team in the second half (.276 in the first half). He's currently ninth in the California League in hitting and tops in triples (14). Peguero has already set the Giants record for triples in a season.
Stoffel's Saves... Relief pitcher Jason Stoffel has converted his last 11 save opportunities dating back to July 7. In 16 relief appearances during that span, Stoffel possesses a 2.93 ERA with 24 strikeouts in 15 1/3 innings. His 23 saves this season are fourth in the California League and tops in the San Francisco Giants farm system.
San Jose Wins League Record Sixth Consecutive First Half Title... The San Jose Giants won their California League record sixth consecutive first half North Division title this season. The Giants finished the first half with a 45-25 mark - eight games ahead of both the Modesto Nuts (37-33) and Visalia Rawhide (37-33). By virtue of winning the first half, San Jose secures a berth in the playoffs and will receive a first round bye. The Giants have won three league championships (2005, 2007, 2009) in the last five seasons and will be attempting to win back-to-back titles for the first time in franchise history this September. San Jose will open the playoffs on Saturday, September 11 at Municipal Stadium with Game One of the best-of-five North Division Series. The previous league record for consecutive first half division titles was three (Visalia).
Stockton Ports... The Stockton Ports, an affiliate of the Oakland Athletics, enter tonight's action with an overall record of 64-59 and a second half mark of 33-20 - three games ahead of the Bakersfield Blaze (30-23) for first place in the North Division. Stockton has won 13 consecutive games - the longest win streak in the California League this season. Their last loss was on August 5 - a 6-3 defeat to the Giants. The Ports have earned four consecutive series sweeps since then - all against South Division opponents. Ian Krol is slated to make the start on the mound tonight in his California League debut.
