Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA - The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes finished a disappointing home stand on Friday night, as the High Desert Mavericks scored seven times in the eighth inning, coming from behind for an 8-5 win over the Quakes at The Epicenter.
Quakes' closer Eddie McKiernan couldn't hold a three-run lead, as he blew his fourth save in 26 chances this year.
McKiernan (3-2) entered with a 4-1 lead in the eighth, after the Mavs loaded the bases with one out against reliever Nick Pugliese. McKiernan's first pitch was ripped up the middle by Edilio Colina, plating a pair of runs to pull the Mavs within one at 4-3. Johermyn Chavez followed with an RBI single to right, evening the game at 4-4. McKiernan then issued an intentional walk to Rich Poythress, loading the bases with one out for 19-year-old Ji-Man Choi. McKiernan punched out Choi looking for the second out, but then allowed back-to-back two-run singles to Kuo-Hui Lo and Shaver Hansen, as High Desert took the lead for good at 8-4.
The Quakes got a run back in the ninth, as Gabe Jacobo led off with a triple, then scored on a Richard Cates groundout, capping the scoring at 8-5. Luis Jimenez popped up to end the game though, finishing off a 1-6 home stand.
High Desert's seven-run eighth inning spoiled a pair of solo homers from Angel Castillo and six strong innings from Quakes' starter Manny Flores, who allowed just a single run over six innings in the no-decision.
Mavs' reliever Cheyne Hann (3-5) earned the win with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Castillo's solo homer in the fourth tied the game at 1-1 against Mavs' starter Bobby LaFromboise. Castillo struck again in the sixth, tying Jacobo for the team lead in homers with 19, to make it a 2-1 Quakes' advantage against Mavs' reliever Blake Nation. RBI hits from Dillon Baird and Kevin Ramos put the Quakes up 4-1 after six.
After losing seven of their last eight overall to fall to three games back of first-place Lake Elsinore, the Quakes (26-27, 65-58) will look to put the rough home stand behind them on Saturday, as they open a six-game road trip to Lake Elsinore and Bakersfield. On Saturday night, Garrett Richards (1-1) will face Storm righthander Anthony Bass (7-6) in the opening game of a three-game series from The Diamond in Lake Elisnore. First pitch is at 7:05pm.
The Quakes return to The Epicenter, opening the final home stand of the regular season on Friday, August 27th. Friday night is another $1 Family Feast Night, as fans will enjoy $1 Hot Dogs, $1 Coca-Cola Products and $1 Ice Cream Sandwiches, thanks to KFROG 95.1. Gates open at 6:05pm and tickets are available by calling (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. Go Quakes!
