High Desert Mavericks News Release

In a game that was determined by who could take advantage of the other team's mistakes, the Mavs turned several Storm miscues into runs in a 12-8 win over Lake Elsinore Friday night at Mavericks Stadium.

The Storm had several chances to score and take control early in the game, but could never manage to do so.

Lake Elsinore left the bases loaded in the first. The Storm did get on the board in the second, though. After a couple of walks, Daniel Robertson drove both runners in with a double.

The Storm would end up with runners at the corners with one out, but could not score any more.

In the bottom of the inning, the Mavs scored thanks to a critical error. With runners at second and third and one out, Trevor Coleman flied out to right field. It wasn't deep enough to score Jake Shaffer from third, but catcher Ali Solis dropped the throw, giving Shaffer enough of a window to score.

The Mavs needed no help in the third, as Kyle Seager hit a home run on the first pitch of the inning to tie the game.

An error, infield single, and a walk helped the Storm load the bases with one out in the fourth. A wild pitch scored a run, but that's all the Storm would get.

The Mavs took control of the game with seven runs in the fifth. A walk and a hit batsman put two on for Rich Poythress, who drove them both in with a double to give the Mavs their first lead at 4-3.

After an error put runners at the corners with one out, Daniel Carroll dropped a sac bunt down, and Poythress slid around the tag at home to score.

Coleman walked, and Shaver Hansen provided the biggest swing of the night with a grand slam out to left field to make it 9-3.

Two more followed in the sixth. Denny Almonte hit and RBI double, and Coleman lifted a sac fly to put the Mavs ahead by eight.

Solis made up for his earlier transgression with a two-run homer in the seventh to cut it to 11-5.

Almonte collected his third double and second RBI of the game in the bottom of the eighth for the Mavs final run.

The Storm scored three times in the ninth, but it wasn't nearly enough to overcome all of their miscues. They finished with four errors, six walks, and three hit batsmen. Of the 11 men left on base, eight were in scoring position.

The Mavs were far from perfect either, issuing six walks in addition to a key error. Starting pitcher Jon Hesketh was responsible for five of the walks, and he left after throwing over 100 pitches through three innings.

The bullpen brought some stability in the middle of the game. Daniel Cooper (1-0) earned his first win, allowing one unearned run over two innings.

Unlike the Mavs, the Storm bullpen wilted in middle innings. Eric Gonzalez (6-4) took the loss, allowing five runs on just one hit in 1.1 innings.

The Mavs will look for a third straight win Saturday night when they face the Storm at 7:05 p.m. Join the Mavs for the final fireworks show of the season after the game and a chance to win $1,000 courtesy of Valley-Hi Toyota.
