San Jose Giants News Release
The San Jose Giants left 14 runners on base in a 4-2 loss to the Stockton Ports on Friday evening at Banner Island Ballpark. San Jose managed just one hit in 11 at-bats with runners in scoring position, left the bases loaded in two separate innings and were unable to overcome a three-run deficit as the Ports claimed the opener of the four-game series. The loss drops San Jose's overall record to 70-60.
Francisco Peguero (2-for-4) extended his hitting streak to 10 games while Johnny Monell (2-for-5) added a pair of hits to lead the offensive attack. The Giants stranded 11 runners on base over the first five innings.
Stockton took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning against San Jose starter Jorge Bucardo. After Bucardo set down the first two batters of the frame, Stephen Parker lined a double into the right field corner and advanced to third on the play when Juan Perez's throw bounced past second for an error. Mike Spina followed with a single into left plating Parker with the first run of the frame.
The Ports moved in front by a 3-0 margin with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Todd Johnson walked to start the inning while Jermaine Mitchell walked with two outs. A balk advanced the runners to second and third before Grant Green doubled down the left field line to score both Johnson and Mitchell.
Bucardo (2-2) suffered the loss after surrendering three runs (all earned) on four hits over four innings of work. The right-hander walked five, struck out four and was charged with two balks.
The Giants had several opportunities in the first five innings against Stockton starter Fabian Williamson, including three singles from Peguero, Jose Flores and Monell in the opening frame. However, Peguero was picked-off at second by Williamson for the second out while Charlie Culberson flied out to right stranding two runners.
In the second, consecutive walks to Michael Sandoval and Ehire Adrianza began the inning, but Williamson quickly set down the next three hitters. San Jose threatened in the top of the fourth as three more walks loaded the bases with two outs, however Williamson induced Perez to pop out to first. The Giants then finally broke through in the fifth as Flores drew a leadoff walk before Monell singled and then Sandoval walked with one out to load the bases. Williamson recovered to strikeout Adrianza on a 3-2 pitch for the second out and then was removed from the game in favor of Mike Hart. Drew Biery was up next and he walked on four pitches to bring home Flores with San Jose's first run. Wendell Fairley though followed by lining out to center as the Giants left the bases loaded for the second straight inning.
San Jose moved to within 3-2 in the eighth as Adrianza led off with a triple into the right field corner and scored when the next batter, Biery, grounded out to shortstop. Fairley then singled before advancing to second on Peguero's groundout. Perez followed with an infield single to shortstop - the Giants' only hit with a runner in scoring position - as Fairley moved to third. Ports closer Paul Smyth though set down Flores on a routine groundout to second keeping Stockton in front.
The Ports added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth against Scott Nestor as Tyler Ladendorf led off with a double and scored on Jermaine Mitchell's one-out single up the middle.
In the top of the ninth, Culberson was hit by a pitch with one out, but Sandoval struck out swinging and Adrianza, as the potential tying run, flied out to the warning track in left center ending the game.
Hart (2-0) was credited with the victory after tossing 2 1/3 scoreless innings and allowing just one hit. Smyth worked the last two innings to pick-up his 26th save.
