Mavs defeat Modesto
August 6, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release
One of the big reasons why the Mavs have been able to avoid a prolonged team-wide slump this year is that they always seem to respond after an off day at the plate. After being held to a season-low three hits Wednesday, the Mavs exploded for 11 runs and 13 hits in an 11-2 romp over the Modesto Nuts Thursday night at John Thurman Field.
The Mavs equaled their hit output from the previous night in the first inning, collecting three hits and plating a run on a two-out RBI single by Eddy Martinez-Esteve.
In the third, Martinez-Esteve crushed a two-run homer to put the Mavs up 3-0. Kuo Hui Lo finished the frame with a two-out RBI single to give the Mavs a four-run lead.
Two more followed in the fourth. Kyle Seager ripped an RBI double to score the first run. Later in the frame, Seager stole third and scored on a error on the play to make it 7-0.
Lo then collected an RBI single in the fifth to put the Mavs up by seven and knock Modesto starting pitcher Ethan Hollingsworth out of the game.
In his return from Double-A, it was a forgettable night for the All-Star Hollingsworth (7-8). He went a season-low 4.1 innings, allowing seven runs and tying a season high with nine hits.
Whereas Hollingsworth struggled, Mavericks pitcher Jon Hesketh turned in his best start since his promotion. Hesketh (1-3) lasted a season-high seven innings, allowing just one run and four hits. After allowing a single to the first batter he faced, Hesketh would not give up another hit until there were two outs in the sixth.
The lefty also tied a season high with nine strikeouts and walked four.
The Nuts finally scored on Hesketh in the sixth when Mike Zuanich hit an RBI double to break up the shutout and make it 7-1.
The Mavs put the game to bed with back-to-back RBI doubles by Seager and Edilio Colina in the eighth. Modesto scored its last run in the bottom of the inning on a Ryan Peisel RBI single.
Rich Poythress blasted a two-run homer in the ninth to put to finishing touches on the blowout.
With the win, the Mavs notched their 60th win of the season and have now won five straight series. They finished play against the Nuts with a 5-5 record, taking four of six in Modesto.
The Mavs continue their road trip in Stockton Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Live coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on the High Desert's TALK 960 and www.talk960.com.
