Quakes Swept at Home, Fall 3-0

August 6, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Rancho Cucamonga, CA - The Quakes couldn't avoid the sweep on Wednesday night, falling 3-0 to the Lake Elsinore Storm, a loss that puts them two games behind first-place High Desert in The California League South.

Despite a 3-for-4 effort from Mike Trout, the rest of the Quakes' offense managed only two hits on the night, failing to back a strong outing from starter Orangel Arenas. Arenas carried a shutout into the seventh inning, allowing just one run on five hits over seven total innings of work.

The Storm broke open the scoreless pitcher's duel with a run in the seventh, a two-out RBI double from Kevin Hansen to put Lake Elsinore on the board, 1-0. They added two insurance runs in the eighth inning against reliever Jose Perez. Perez opened the inning by walking Cole Figeroa who stole second and later scored on a Jaff Decker single. Daniel Robertson followed with a double to centerfield that scored Decker, giving the Storm all the runs they needed at 3-0.

The Quakes had scoring opportunities, including a bases-loaded situation in the first, but Lake Elsinore starter Juan Oramas punched out Dillon Baird on strikes to end the inning. The Quakes left eight over the first five innings and ten runners stranded on the night. In getting out for the second time this year, the offense went 0-for-14 with runners in scoring position on the night.

Five Lake Elsinore pitchers allowed just one hit each to shut-down the Quakes offense. Noah Mull (1-0) recorded the win in his California League debut, tossing two innings, while fanning three on the night.

Eric Oliver saved the Quakes at least a run in the fifth, as he made a diving stop with two runners in scoring position, on a hard-hit grounder from Brad Chalk. After back-handing the grounder, Oliver popped up, fell, then lunged at the first base bag to beat Chalk and make the inning-ending play to keep the Storm off the board.

The Quakes will try to snap their four-game losing streak on Friday night as they begin a three-game set against the Inland Empire 66ers. The Quakes send righthander Ryan Chaffee (4-5) to the mound against Bobby Blevins (1-5) in the 7:05pm start.
