San Jose Giants News Release
Drew Biery hit a tiebreaking three-run double with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to propel the San Jose Giants to a 6-3 victory over the Stockton Ports on Thursday evening at Municipal Stadium. Scott Nestor and Brian Anderson combined for 4 2/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen to finish the contest as San Jose earned a sweep of the three-game series. The Giants have won five out of their last six games and own an overall record of 62-48.
Michael Sandoval (3-for-4, 2B) collected three hits to lead the San Jose offensive attack. James Simmons (2-for-4, HR, RBI) connected for his eighth home run of the season while Biery (2-for-4, 2B, 3 RBI) and Juan Perez (2-for-5, 2B) added two hits apiece.
Nestor (3-3) was credited with the victory after tossing 2 2/3 scoreless innings with just one hit allowed. Nestor struck out four and walked one during his stint on the mound. Anderson (2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO) pitched the last two innings to earn his first save of the season.
With the score tied 3-3, Perez began the key seventh-inning rally with a single into center field. After Ehire Adrianza's sacrifice bunt advanced Perez to second, Ports reliever Scott Hodsdon intentionally walked Francisco Peguero. Sandoval followed with a sharp ground ball single up the middle that was stopped by a diving Grant Green from his shortstop position. The hit loaded the bases, but Charlie Culberson was unable to bring the go-ahead run home with his ground ball to first easily forcing Perez at the plate for the second out of the inning. Biery though was up next and he laced a 2-0 pitch from Hodsdon into the left center field gap to clear the bases as Peguero, Sandoval and Culberson all scored to give the Giants a three-run lead.
Anderson entered the game to begin the top of the eighth and quickly retired the first two batters of the inning. Brandon Pinckney then drew a walk before Jermaine Mitchell singled to bring the potential tying run to the plate, but Anderson induced the next hitter, Green, to bounce into a fielder's choice ending the threat. Anderson then worked a 1-2-3 top of the ninth to finish the game.
The Giants initially had a 3-0 lead with single runs in the first, second and fourth innings against Stockton starter Ben Hornbeck. In the bottom of the first, Perez led off with a double into the left field corner, advanced to third on Adrianza's sacrifice bunt and scored on a wild pitch. In the bottom of the second, Biery started the inning with a single before an error and a walk loaded the bases. Then with two outs, Hornbeck issued a four-pitch walk to Adrianza to plate Biery with the second run of the night. Then in the fourth, Simmons drove the first pitch of the inning from Hornbeck over the fence in left center field to extend the San Jose lead to 3-0.
Jorge Bucardo started on the mound for the Giants and worked 4 1/3 innings with three runs (two earned) and three hits allowed. Bucardo walked a career-high seven and struck out two. He began his outing with four scoreless innings before running into trouble in the top of the fifth.
Bucardo began the fifth inning by issuing three consecutive walks to Pinckney, Mitchell and Green. Stephen Parker then smacked a double off the fence in center plating Pinckney with Stockton's first run of the evening, however Mitchell was thrown out at the plate attempting to score a second run on the play. Bucardo then hit Mike Spina with a pitch to again load the bases before Tyler Ladendorf hit a chopper up the middle that was mishandled by Culberson for an error as Green and Parker both scored to tie the game at 3-3.
Nestor was then summoned from the bullpen and he promptly struck out Jeremy Barfield and Todd Johnson to strand runners at first and second. Nestor pitched around a leadoff single in the sixth and a one-out walk in the seventh before the Giants reclaimed the lead.
