Mavs defeat 66ers

High Desert Mavericks News Release
After a power outage delayed the start of the second half for the Mavericks, it proved to be worth the wait on Friday. The Mavs defeated the Inland Empire 66ers by scores of 4-3 and 2-1 Friday night at home in two tightly contested games.
Play resumed after Thursday's night game was suspended in the fourth inning with the Mavs leading 2-1. In the Mavs first at bat of the day, they rallied for two runs after having none on and two outs. Kyle Seager sparked the rally with a double, and Edilio Colina and Dennis Raben followed with RBI singles to put the Mavs ahead 4-1.
The 66ers cut the lead to 4-2 in the sixth on a solo homer by Chris Gutierrez, his first of the season.
The first three hitters of the eighth inning all reached safely, including an RBI single by Steven Caseres to pull Inland Empire with one.
With the tying run and second and the go-ahead run at first with none out, Steve Richard replaced Bobby LaFromboise and retired the next three hitters to keep the Mavs in the lead.
Richard walked Nick Buss to begin the ninth. Ramon Jean sacrificed Buss into scoring position, but Richard retired the next two batters to end the game and earn his seventh save of the season.
LaFromboise (7-3) took his team-leading seventh win of the year, allowing two runs over four innings. He struck out three and walked one.
Emerging ace Anthony Vasquez led the Mavs to a 2-1 win in the night cap. For the second straight start, Vasquez (4-2) went the distance, allowing just one run and six hits.
The Mavs gave Vasquez an early lead, scoring on a two-out RBI single by Eddy Martinez-Esteve in the first inning.
Vasquez's lone mistake came in the fourth when he allowed a two- out RBI double to Alex Garabedian to tie the game.
The Mavs picked him up, thanks to a big error by the 66ers. With a runner at first and two outs, Shaver Hansen sent a routine ground ball to short, but Johan Garcia let it roll right through his legs.
Kyle Seager came up next and delivered an RBI single to give the Mavs the lead.
Inland Empire threatened a couple of times late, but Vasquez never gave in. In the sixth, he was able to work around a one-out double by Travis Denker.
Vasquez walked Garabedian to start the ninth--his first walk in 28.1 innings. He made up for it, though, picking off pinch-runner Nick Buss right away. The next two hitters went down without much of a fight to end the game.
The Mavs will look for a season-best fourth straight win at home Saturday night when they face the 66ers at 7:05 p.m. The Mavs will be handing out 1,000 Jamie McOwen bobbleheads before the game, and the gates will open at 6:05 p.m. For tickets, call 246-MAVS or order online at www.hdmavs.com.
