San Jose Giants News Release

Modesto's Jordan Pacheco and David Christensen smacked home runs and the Nuts finished with 13 hits in a 7-2 victory over the San Jose Giants in the second half opener for both clubs on Thursday night. In front of 5,352 fans at Municipal Stadium, the Nuts scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning to take the lead and never looked back in claiming the win. With the loss, San Jose's overall record drops to 45-26.

Charlie Culberson (2-for-4) and Drew Biery (2-for-3) each produced multi-hit games at the plate to lead the Giants offensively. Brandon Belt (1-for-4) also extended his hitting streak to 12 games.

Eric Stolp (4-5) suffered the loss for San Jose after surrendering four runs (all earned) on eight hits over five innings of work. Stolp walked one and struck out three during his stint on the mound.

With the score tied 1-1, Modesto's Thomas Field began the go-ahead rally in the fourth inning with an infield single. Scott Robinson followed with a double to the fence in deep left center before Ryan Peisel lined an RBI single into center. Erik Wetzel then delivered a sacrifice bunt plating Robinson to give the Nuts a 3-1 lead.

The Giants responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth as Belt blooped a single down the left field line before Culberson lined a single into right putting runners on the corners. Then with Johnny Monell at the plate, Modesto's Rob Scahill uncorked a wild pitch to plate Belt bringing San Jose to within 3-2. Scahill though recovered to set down Monell on a pop out before Culberson was thrown out attempting to steal third base.

Scahill (4-4) was credited with the victory for the Nuts after tossing six-plus innings with two runs (both earned) and seven hits allowed. Scahill, who worked around leadoff singles in the fifth and sixth frames, walked one and struck out two. The right-hander didn't go to a three-ball count until walking Monell - the last batter that he faced - with none out in the bottom of the seventh.

Modesto extended their lead with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. In the top of the fifth against Stolp, Pacheco belted a long solo home run down the left field line. Then in the sixth facing reliever Kyle Woodruff, Michael Mitchell reached on a one-out fielding error committed by Biery at third base allowing Wetzel, who had earlier singled, to score from second.

Trailing 5-2, the Giants threatened in the bottom of the seventh as Culberson led off with a single before Monell drew a walk bringing the potential tying run to the plate. Kurt Yacko was then summoned from the bullpen and he promptly struck out Biery, induced Wendell Fairley to bounce into a fielder's choice and then struck out James Simmons to end the inning.

In the top of the eighth against Brian Anderson, Peisel struck out with one away, but reached first base on a passed ball committed by Monell. Then with two outs, Christensen launched a two-run homer to straightaway center field pushing the Nuts advantage to 7-2.

Yacko struck out one more hitter in a perfect bottom of the eighth before Adam Jorgenson worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to finish the contest. Yacko and Jorgenson combined to retire the last nine San Jose hitters of the game.

The Giants initially took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Juan Perez led off with a triple into the right center field gap and then scored when Ehire Adrianza's ground ball to shortstop was thrown away by Field for an error. Modesto though immediately answered in the top of the second as Field doubled with one out before coming home on Peisel's two-out RBI single into center.

Peisel (3-for-4, 2 RBI) and Pacheco (3-for-5, HR, RBI) each contributed three-hit games for the Nuts.
