Ports Nip JetHawks In Extra Innings

June 25, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
Lancaster JetHawks News Release

In a game filled with twists, turns and a series of momentum swings, Stockton managed to scratch a run off Lancaster closer David Berner in the top of the 10th and secure a 10-9 victory over the JetHawks at Clear Channel Stadium Thursday in the second half opener for both teams.

The game got off to a rocky start for the JetHawks. Kyle Greenwalt allowed seven runs, only three of which were earned, on three hits in the top of the first. Greenwalt struggled with his control and issued three walks and hit a batter before exiting the contest after working just 2/3 of an inning, his shortest start of the season.

Trailing 7-0 after just a half inning of play, the JetHawks began to fight back. Lancaster scored four runs in the bottom of the first - highlighted by a three-run home run from Brandon Barnes - off Ports starter Ben Hornbeck to reduce the deficit to 7-4.

After scoring a run in the bottom of the second, Lancaster added two more runs in the third on RBI singles from Federico Hernandez and Ebert Rosario to tie the game at 7-7.

Stockton scored twice in the top of the fifth off JetHawks reliever Leandro Cespedes to reclaim the lead, but Jay Austin smacked a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth, which made it a 9-8 contest.

Lancaster rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth. Brandon Barnes doubled to start the inning. Later in the frame, Barnes scored on an RBI single from David Flores to send the game into extra innings.

But Stockton immediately answered in the top of the 10th. Grant Green hit a one-out triple and scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly from Stephen Parker's sacrifice fly off Berner. Lancaster got the leadoff man aboard in the bottom of the inning when Brandon Wikoff drew a walk from Paul Smyth. But Wikoff was stranded at second base as Austin and Albert Cartwright hit consecutive groundouts to end the game

Smyth (3-2) picked up the win for Stockton and Berner (1-4) took the loss for Lancaster. With the win, Stockton improved to 1-0 in the second half and 32-39 overall. Lancaster fell to 0-1 and 23-48 overall.

The JetHawks and Ports will meet in the second game of the four-game series Friday. Lancaster will start lefty David Duncan (0-1, 3.38 ERA). Stockton is expected to counter with LHP Paul Oseguera (1-2, 4.84 ERA).
