Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Five Storm pitchers combined to limit the Quakes' offense to just one run and four hits on Thursday night, as Lake Elsinore downed Rancho Cucamonga 3-1, in the opening game of the second half.

The Storm picked up right where they left off in the first half, as the First Half South Division champs improved to a Cal League best 47-24, while the Quakes fell to 39-32.

Storm starter Juan Oramas, who was limited to just two innings, was backed up by three perfect frames from reliever Jorge Reyes (8-4), as the Quakes didn't collect a hit in the first five innings.

Quakes' starter Ryan Chaffee couldn't match the Lake Elsinore arms, as he walked four batters in the third inning, including two with the bases loaded, as the Storm took a 2-0 advantage after three innings. Chaffee (3-3), in his first start for the Quakes since May 27th, allowed two runs on three hits, walking four men over three innings.

Rian Kiniry's single off of Storm reliever Rob Musgrave got the Quakes going in the sixth. Two batters later, Darwin Perez singled to left field, putting the tying runs on with one out for Tyson Auer. Auer hit a ground ball back to the mound, but Lake Elsinore wasn't able to turn a double-play to end the inning. Instead, Auer was safe at first, thanks to an errant throw, scoring Kiniry from third to make it 2-1.

That's as close as the Quakes would get though, as Jaff Decker got that run back in the seventh, thanks to a long home run to right field, putting Lake Elsinore back in front by two at 3-1.

All-Star closer Brad Brach allowed a lead-off single to Auer to open the ninth, but then retired the next three Quakes in order, including Gabe Jacobo on a pop up on the infield to end the game. The save for Brach is his league-lading 26th in 27 chances.

The Quakes (0-1, 39-32) send Matt Shoemaker (5-5) to the mound on Friday night, in game two of the four-game set. The Storm will counter with Nick Schmidt (6-5), with first pitch slated for 7:05pm.

Your Quakes return to The Epicenter for a six-game home stand, starting on Monday, June 28th, as they take on the High Desert Mavericks and the Lake Elsinore Storm. Don't forget about the July 3rd Independence Day Fireworks Celebration, as we celebrate a day early at The Epicenter. Tickets are on sale by calling (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. Thanks for a great first half...we hope to see you at The Epicenter very soon....GO Quakes!
