High Desert Mavericks News Release

After the Inland Empire 66ers put up four runs in the fourth, it looked like it might be another long day at home for the Mavericks. However, the Mavs battled back to tie the game soon thereafter and go on to win 7-6 Sunday evening.

The first batter of the game reached on a missed catch by Denny Almonte in center field. Two walks and two wild pitches by Maikel Cleto later, the 66ers were up 1-0.

Two batters later, Pedro Baez then blasted a three-run homer, and Inland Empire had another crooked number on the board, leading 4-0.

The Mavs answered with a pair of solo homers in their first at bat to cut the lead in half. Kyle Seager led off with a solo shot, extending his hit streak to 25 games.

Johermyn Chavez followed suit with his team leading 22nd homer to make it a 4-2 game.

Prior to that inning, Inland Empire pitcher Ethan Martin had allowed just one home run in 84 innings this season.

The Mavs tied the game in the second. After an RBI triple by Shaver Hansen, Seager followed with an RBI groundout to knot the score at 4-4.

Inland Empire broke the tie with an RBI double by Alfredo Silverio in the top of the fourth, but the Mavs would respond in the bottom of the inning. Chavez tied the game with an RBI groundout to put it at 5-5.

The Mavs would load the bases with one out, but Jake Shaffer hit into an inning-ending double play to keep it tied.

The Mavs had several chances to put more runs on the board, but struggled to bring runners home consistently. They went 0 for their first 6 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base through five innings.

Rich Poythress got the Mavs over the hump in the sixth with an RBI double. Seager lifted a sac fly the next inning to make it 7-5.

The 66ers rallied for a run in the eighth. After having a man on first with two outs, Austin Gallagher and Ramon Jean collected hit to keep the inning alive and pull the 66ers within 7-6.

With the tying run at second, Wes Littleton got Silverio to ground out to end the inning.

In the ninth, the 66ers again had the tying run at second with two out. Littleton would induce yet another groundout to seal the win and earn his fourth save.

After a shaky start by Cleto, the Mavs bullpen held the 66ers to one run over four innings. Brian Moran (1-0) earned his first win with 1.2 scoreless frames.

Geison Aguasviva (1-4) allowed two runs over two innings for Inland Empire, picking up the loss.

The Mavs and 66ers will play the rubber match of their series Monday night at 7:05 p.m. It's another Ebmeyer Charter Munchie Monday, with all nachos, hamburgers, and small sodas on sale for just $1! For tickets, call 246-MAVS or order online at www.hdmavs.com.
