66ers win over Mavericks

July 18, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release

The Mavericks have had all sorts of trouble keeping the Inland Empire 66ers off the scoreboard at Mavericks Stadium this year, and Saturday was no exception with 66ers scoring a 12-4 win.

Things got off to a very ominous start for the Mavs in the first. After the first two 66ers were retired, the next five all collected singles to plate three runs.

Three more scored the next inning. Travis Denker drove in a pair with a single, and Pedro Baez collected a two-out RBI single to make it 6-0.

The Mavs got on the board in the fourth on an RBI single by Denny Almonte.

Any Maverick momentum was soon diluted, as the 66ers responded with yet another three-run inning. Baez collected another RBI single, and two more runs following on ensuing fielder's choices.

The rout became official in the sixth. Steven Caseres hit a three- run homer to center field with two outs to put Inland Empire ahead 12-1.

The Mavs scored the final three runs of the night with their own three-run rally in the seventh. Jake Shaffer hit an RBI double, and Kyle Seager followed with a two-run homer to round out the scoring.

Seager finished 3-for-5, extending his current hit streak to 24 games. Edilio Colina also collected a single to run his streak to 10 straight games.

However, the real offensive stars of the night were all wearing 66ers uniforms. Six players had multi-hit nights, including three apiece by Baez and Scott Van Slyke. Baez and Caseres combined to go 5-for-9 with seven RBI's.

In the two teams last three meetings in the High Desert, the 66ers have put up 40 runs, scoring at least 12 each time out.

Mavericks pitcher Anthony Vasquez endured his roughest start of 2010, allowing a season-high nine runs and a season-high 11 hits. Vasquez (6-4) also had his shortest outing as a Maverick, leaving after just 4.2 innings.

Will Savage turned in his second good start at Mavericks Stadium, allowing four runs over seven innings. Savage (3-2) scattered eight hits with five strikeouts and two walks.

The Mavs will look to get back at the 66ers Sunday evening at 5:05 p.m. For tickets, call 246-MAVS or order online at www.hdmavs.com.
