Lancaster JetHawks News Release
(LANCASTER, CA) - Charlie Culberson and Francisco Peguero paced a San Jose lineup that collected 10 hits and smacked three home runs off Lancaster starter Ross Seaton en route to a 7-5 victory over the JetHawks in the opener of a three-game series at Clear Channel Stadium Saturday. The Giants finished with 15 hits off Lancaster pitching. San Jose drew first blood with a run off Seaton in the opening frame. Culberson hit an RBI single that plated Wendell Fairley and gave the Giants a 1-0 edge.
The JetHawks struck back in the bottom of the first when Brian Pellegrini belted a two-run home run that put Lancaster in front 2-1.
After scoring a run in the second, the Giants scored two runs in the third and two more in the fourth on the strength of three home runs. Culberson smacked a two-run homer in the third and Joel Weeks and James Simmons hit consecutive solo homers in the fourth, which chased Seaton from the contest.
Lee Cruz socked a solo homer off Giants starter Kyle Nicholson in the bottom of the third to reduce San Jose's lead to 6-3.
The JetHawks sliced the deficit to just a run in the bottom of the seventh when Barry Butera belted a two-run home run off Nicholson.
But San Jose scored a valuable insurance run in the top of the eighth on Juan Perez' RBI double off JetHawks reliever Brian Wabick. San Jose's bullpen tossed two and 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to preserve the Giants' victory.
Nicholson (6-7) earned the win for San Jose. Seaton (4-10) took the loss for Lancaster.
With the win, the Giants improved to 8-15 in the second half and 53-40 overall. The JetHawks fell to 10-13 and 33-60 overall.
