Kansas City Mavericks News Release

INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks defeated the Mississippi RiverKings 4-2 Monday night in Game One of the Opening Round of the Central Hockey League (CHL) playoffs. Jordan Foreman had a pair of goals and Jeff Christian added three assists as Missouri never trailed in the game. Brett Hammond scored the game-winning goal for the Mavericks and Charlie Effinger stopped 27 of 29 shots in the Mavericks' first playoff win in franchise history at Independence Events Center. Game Two is Wednesday night, March 24 at DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven, Mississippi at 7:05 p.m.

Mavericks' goaltender Charlie Effinger got into the game early and made a sprawling save on the RiverKings' first shot of the game. The Mavericks withstood Mississippi's early barrage and Bill Vandermeer gave the home team a 1-0 lead at the 11:37 mark. Christian picked up a loose puck in the left slot and fed Vandermeer who was just inside the right circle. Vandermeer unleashed a slap shot that beat RiverKings' goaltender Kyle McNulty to the stick side. The RiverKings tied the game at 13:54 when Bobby Chaumont sent a pass from behind the net to Elias Godoy who banged it home from the top of the crease.

Missouri bounced back and took a 2-1 lead less than two minutes later on a fortuitous bounce. Christian attempted to rim the puck deep into the Mississippi zone, but it bounced off a linesman and back to Christian. The Mavericks' forward quickly centered the puck to Jordan Foreman who snapped it into the open net as RiverKings' goalie McNulty was out of position attempting to play the puck that would have gone behind the net.

The Mavericks weren't finished in the opening period, and the home team took a 3-1 lead just 1:16 after the Foreman goal. Missouri earned a power play and quickly took advantage when Mike Burgoyne fed Hammond who muscled the puck under the padding of McNulty. Missouri held the 3-1 lead after the first period and outshot Mississippi 12-11 through 20 minutes.

Neither team scored in the second period despite a number of scoring chances for both teams. Mississippi outshot the Mavericks 13-11 in the period, but was not able to get closer on the scoreboard.

The Mavericks were forced to kill a full five-minute penalty to start the third period as Carlyle Lewis received a game misconduct for spearing. Missouri successfully killed that penalty and another two-minutes directly following. Darrell Stoddard scored at the 15:35 mark in the third to cut the Mavericks lead to 3-2, but the RiverKings were unable to score the equalizer. Foreman netted his second of the night in the final minute on an empty net to secure the Mavericks victory.

Missouri finished 1-4 on the power play and killed all five of the RiverKings' chances. The Mavericks also won the battle in shots at 33-29.
