Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks came out on top of their second match-up with the Tulsa Oilers in an exciting 4-3 contest on Friday night.
The Mavericks came into the first period on fire, registering two goals in the first three minutes of play. The first tally on the board was put away by John-Scott Dickson, his sixth of the season, assisted by Evan Vossen and Obi Aduba only 68 seconds into play. Then Sebastien Thinel doubled the Mavericks lead with a quick goal of his own, assisted by Andrew Courtney. Courtney was removed from the game just before the half-way mark for a boarding call and a game misconduct. Fired up by Courtney's removal, the Mavericks rallied and put another point on the board, scored by Matt Stephenson and assisted by Thinel and Castonguay.
In the second period of play, the Mavericks held a commanding lead over the game, denying the Oilers a single shot on goal until the tail end of the period. But the Oilers played the full twenty minutes and forward Ben Gordon took an important goal in the last ten seconds of the period to come within one-goal of the Mavericks 3-2.
Tulsa came back swinging in the third period, flip-flopping the shots on goal opportunities in their favor and pulling themselves back into the game physically. Almost 30 minutes of penalties were handed out in the third period, and each team found themselves with important man-advantaged opportunities. Matt Stephenson scored his second goal of the night, assisted by Dave Pszenyczny, to bring the Mavs up 4-2 over the Oilers with 55 seconds remaining in the period. Not ready to quit, Tulsa forced one more goal behind Shane Owen in the last 10 seconds of play.
The Mavericks take their 12th win of the season at home 4-3 over the Tulsa Oilers.
The Mavericks play their next home game on Saturday, November 30 at 7:05pm against the Wichita Thunder in the third game of the Independence Cup Series. The Mavericks won their first two back-to-back match-ups against the Thunder. The Mavericks won their last game against the Oilers 4-3 on the road in Tulsa.
