Three Things You Need to Know
1.) Wednesday Night Rewind- There were five tilts on Thanksgiving Eve with Wichita, Missouri, Arizona, Denver and Tulsa all earning wins. The Mavs and Oilers needed shootouts to top Quad City and St. Charles, respectively. Denver played Rapid City for the first time this season handing their rivals just their second loss in 14 games this season. Wichita put an end to a four-game slide with an impressive showing at home against Brampton and the hottest team in the CHL, Arizona, defeated Allen in Prescott Valley. Top performances from the night were turned in by Arizona's Bryan Cameron who netted a hat trick in the win over the Americans and Missouri's Colt King who scored twice in his team's win over the Mallards.
2.) Pick Six for the Sundogs- Arizona remains the hottest team in the league riding a six-game win streak after Wednesday's win over Allen (10-6-1). The Sundogs (7-8-1) have turned things around and are now just one game from reaching the .500 mark. The Americans will look for revenge on Friday and Saturday night and look to end their three-game slide. Allen has lost six of their last nine games after starting the season with a 7-0-1 record. Andrew Engelage has been a catalyst for the Sundogs winning five straight decisions while allowing just 10 goals over that stretch. Allen had former CHL Goaltender of the Year and CHL Rookie of the Year Mark Guggenberger in net for the first time this season on Wednesday and the former all-star made 36 saves taking the loss.
3.) First Place on the Line- The Rapid City Rush (12-2-0) and the Denver Cutthroats (10-4-3) play on Friday night for first place in the CHL. The Rush currently lead the conference by one point over the Cutthroats after Denver stole a victory in Rapid City on Wednesday night. The Fish have won 10 of the 17 all-time meetings against their rivals. Garett Bembridge scored his league-leading 16th goal in the win on Wednesday for the Cutthroats and Kent Patterson made 37 saves winning his third straight decision (allowed only four goals over the three wins). The Cutthroats and Rush play again on Saturday night finishing the three-game set in South Dakota.
By the Numbers
4: The number of consecutive shootouts the Quad City Mallards (5-3-4) have played in after Wednesday's extra session loss in Missouri. The Mallards are 1-3 over those four shootouts but can take satisfaction that they have earned points in nine of the 12 games they have played this season. The four consecutive shootouts for the Flock have all taken place on the road. Quad City returns home on Friday beginning a five-game home stand when they host St. Charles (3-9-3).
One-Timers
-One of the biggest showdowns on Friday night features the Missouri Mavericks (11-3-0) and the Tulsa Oilers (10-7-2). The two clubs are tied for third place in the CHL with 22 points and for the Oilers, they will be looking for their fourth straight win and for the Mavs, they will be looking to improve on their 4-1 home record.
-The Arizona Sundogs have turned away 24 of the last 27 shorthanded chances on home ice and overall are tied for the best PK % in the league on home ice (86%).
-Wichita put an end to a four-game slide on Wednesday night with a 3-2 win over Brampton and former goaltender Grant Rollheiser. Ian Lowe scored the game winning goal and has a goal and an assist in three games since returning from the injured reserve.
-Although he is just 2-3-2 over his last seven decisions, St. Charles goaltender Robert Moss has been playing well allowing two goals or fewer in four of those seven games and 14 goals overall. Moss ranks sixth in the CHL with a 2.87 GAA.
-Tulsa's Michel Beausoleil scored a goal for the seventh straight game, the longest goal streak in the CHL this season. The veteran has eight goals over his seven games.
-Missouri's Colt King recorded his third two-goal game of the season on Wednesday in his team's win over Quad City. His eight goals are second on the Mavs.
-The Denver Cutthroats are a league-best +12 in the third period this season outscoring the opposition 25-13.
-Brampton defenseman Jamie VanderVeeken may be second on his team in scoring with 12 points but on Wednesday he recorded his first goal of the season. VanderVeeken has points in four straight games (1-4=5).
