Kansas City Mavericks News Release
DAYTON, Ohio - The Missouri Mavericks were defeated by the Dayton Gems, 4-1, Thursday night at Hara Arena. Gems' netminder Bryan Hogan stopped 40 of 41 shots in the win and the Mavericks allowed only 26 shots on net. Gems' forward Jonathan Ornelas had two goals in the win, and Brett Lutes notched three points on a goal and two assists. Andrew Courtney scored the lone goal for the Mavericks and the teams will head to Independence for two games this weekend at Independence Events Center.
"It's just disappointing, nobody quits, and we are consistently putting up huge shot totals but not getting the results," said Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman. "We are doing the right things but not getting results so we have to continue to make adjustments. The guys know they have to quit losing those one-on-one battles, but we look forward to taking the momentum we gained in the third period and play in front of our fans in our own building tomorrow night."
The Gems took a 1-0 lead at the 6:32 mark of the first period when Lutes banged home a rebound past Mavericks' goaltender Charlie Effinger. Damian Surma and Matthew Larke assisted on the play, but the Mavericks bounced back and tied the game just over four minutes later. Forward Ed McGrane was behind the Dayton goal and fed Courtney who beat Gems' goaltender Hogan. Andy Zulyniak earned the second assist, but the Mavericks were unable to get another puck past Hogan. Ornelas scored his first goal of the game to regain the lead for the Gems at the 16:27 mark of the first period. He was assisted by James Sanford and Nic Polaski. The Gems took the 2-1 lead into the first intermission and held a 10-9 lead in shots as well.
Just 17 seconds into second period, the Gems took a 3-1 lead on Ornelas' second goal of the game. The goal was on the power play and marked the only goal with the man advantage in the game. Greg Labenski scored the final goal of the game at the 13:42 mark of the second period giving the Gems a 4-1 lead. Lutes and Matt Baxter assisted on the play. The Mavericks outshot the Gems 16-10 in the period, but it was Dayton who took the three-goal lead into the final period.
Missouri continued to pour shots on net in the final period, but couldn't get another puck past Hogan. The Mavericks had 16 shots compared to just four for the Gems in the final period.
The Mavericks finished 0-for-5 on the power play and the team hasn't scored a power play goal in their last four games. Missouri has zero goals on their last 22 power play chances. Dayton finished 1-for-3 on the power play. The home team has won every game in the all-time series between the Mavericks and Gems.
The Mavericks and Gems will battle again on Friday and Saturday nights at Independence Events Center. The first 1,500 fans to Friday's game will receive a Simon Watson bobblehead and the first 1,000 fans to Saturday night's game will received a Mavericks' holiday ornament. Tickets for all regular season games are on sale via Ticketmaster. Call (816) 252-7825 for more information or visit www.MissouriMavericks.com .
