Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks may not have been the first on the scoreboard on Friday night in Tulsa, but the Mavs quickly turned their game around in the first period to take a commanding 4-1 lead over the Oilers in the first twenty minutes of play, setting the tone for the rest of their night.
Erno Suomalainen, making his third appearance in goal since he was called back to the team in late December, let one quick goal slip by him early in the first period, allowing the Oilers to draw first blood. But that shot would be one of few to cross the Mavericks goal line, as Missouri powered through to take a striking offensive jump on their opponents in the first period.
Andrew Courtney, notching his fifth goal in the last five games, took the equalizer on the Mavericks' first power play of the night, assisted by Mike Ramsay and Eric Castonguay at the 5:32 mark.
Missouri continued to own puck possession and capitalized with three more goals in the first period by Colt King (assisted by Thinel and Castonguay), Anders Franzon (unassisted), and Rob Kleebaum (assisted by Trevor Kell and Andrew Courtney) to give the Mavs a 4-1 lead heading into period two.
The Mavericks were able to hold off the Oilers for all but one goal, scored by Nathan Lutz to cut the Missouri lead in half 4-2. Carrying their momentum into the third period, the Mavs maintained a healthy rhythm and almost posted another lamp-lighter, but Kleebaum was denied the tally when the goal came free from its posts.
Down to the final two minutes of play, Tulsa proved itself capable of coming back from behind when they pulled their goaltender to allow for an extra attacker and scored to put themselves within one goal of tying up the scoreboard. John-Scott Dickson answered back with an empty net goal, assisted by Evan Vossen, with only five seconds left on the clock to give the Mavericks a two-goal game and win 5-3.
The Missouri Mavericks play their next game at home Saturday, January 18th at the Independence Events Center facing-off against the Wichita Thunder in the sixth game of the Independence Cup Series. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster.com and the Silverstein Eye Centers Box Office.
