Kansas City Mavericks News Release

INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - In the first game of the Show Me Cup series, the Missouri Mavericks came out on top 3-2 after 65 minutes of play and a 5-round shootout battle with the St. Charles Chill. The Mavericks were ready to turn up the heat at the Chill's inaugural CHL game, after falling 2-0 in an exhibition match to the fledgling team last week, on October 11, 2013.

The first period saw a whopping 24 minutes of penalty time, giving both Missouri and St. Charles several opportunities to deliver a power play goal, but with no results. It was Anders Franzon, newly appointed defensive Maverick from the University of Vermont, who would tally the first goal of the game in a strong unassisted effort over the Chill's net minder, Mathieu Corbeil.

The Mavericks up 1-0 to enter the first, took a strong aggressive hold of the period as Saverio Posa locked in a second goal for the visiting team with assists from Mavericks veterans, Colt King and Trevor Kell.

Period three was the Chill's chance to fight back against their two-goal deficit, and they delivered in a big way. Aided by the momentum of a goal credited to Chill defenseman, Jordan Fox, (that appeared to be knocked past Mavericks goaltender Shane Owen by teammate Math Stephenson), the St. Charles underdog took control of the ice and denied the Mavericks several opportunities to widen the gap.

With just over a minute left in game regulation, forward Martin Hlinka, scored the Chill's first power play goal of the evening, on their tenth man-advantage opportunity, tying the game at 2-2 and sending the season opener to overtime.

After a fierce 5 minutes of overtime could not determine a winner, the shootout battle allowed John-Scott Dickson, Sebastien Thinel, and Eric Castonguay to rise to the occasion and give the Mavericks the extra point.

Mavericks defeat the Chill 3-2 at the Family Arena in St. Charles. The in-state rivals meet again in St. Charles on Wednesday, October 30 at 7:05pm (CT).

The Missouri Mavericks continue their season in Arizona next week when they take on the Sundogs on Friday, October 25 at 9:05pm (CT).

The Mavericks play their first home game on November 2. Individual tickets and Season tickets are on sale now. With season tickets starting at just over $11 per game and FREE parking, the Mavericks are the pinnacle of family affordable entertainment.
