INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - The Missouri Mavericks announced today that they have re-signed forward Andrew Courtney for the 2016-17 season. Additionally, the Mavericks have named Courtney team captain for the upcoming campaign.

"We are thrilled to re-sign Andrew Courtney. He is the backbone of this team and an integral piece of this team. We are looking for him to have a big year and be a leader on and off the ice. We are going to build a strong core around him," said Mavericks general manager Brent Thiessen.

Courtney, 31, has spent the entirety of his five-year career with the Mavericks. He holds the club career records for most games played (318) and goals (140) while ranking second in assists (125) and points (265) and third in penalty minutes (340). Last season Courtney finished third on the Mavericks with 21 goals and fourth with 40 points.

"From Day One, getting Andrew Courtney back was a top priority for me. Whether it's scoring a big goal, taking a hit to make a play or blocking a shot late in the game, Courtney is a guy who I can count on to get it done. He does what it takes to win and will play a huge role in our efforts to win a championship," said Mavericks head coach John-Scott Dickson.

Prior to turning pro Courtney, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound wing, suited up for the University of Lethbridge (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) from 2006 to 2011. Over the course of five seasons he skated in 106 games with the Pronghorns and netted 72 points (44g, 28a).

"I am really excited to be back with the Mavericks this season. It's a first-class organization with the best fans in the ECHL, and I'm eager to get to work on our goal of winning a Kelly Cup.

"We are in a great position to succeed with John-Scott Dickson behind the bench. He knows the game well, is an excellent communicator and commands the respect of his players. It's still early in the summer, but I think we're on the path to making this a great season," said Courtney.

Courtney has served as an alternate captain in each of Missouri's first two seasons in the ECHL. With today's announcement he becomes just the fourth captain in the Mavericks' eight-year history following Carlyle Lewis, Sebastien Thinel and Trevor Ludwig.

"I'm honored to be named captain of the Mavericks. This is the only place I have played in my pro career, and I've played with each of the captains who came before me. So it means a lot to get that ‚¬ËœC' and I'm going to do my best to help bring home the championship our fans deserve," added Courtney.

In his first year as a head coach, Dickson had no reservations in taking a different approach to his team's leadership group. "It's a little unconventional for an ECHL team to name a captain at this time of the year, but Andrew is the perfect choice to lead this team. He's played his whole career here and understands what it is to be a Maverick."
