Allen, Texas - The Allen Americans, two-time Kelly Cup Champions and ECHL affiliate of the San Jose Sharks, announced today that the team has signed forward J.P. Lafontaine to a new deal for the 2016-2017 season.

J.P. Lafontaine joined the Americans early last season, after being acquired in a trade with the Toledo Walleye. The native of Oxford, Michigan, will begin his sophomore season of professional hockey. In 61 games last season, he had 5 goals and 15 assists for 20 points.

"After the year we had last season, who wouldn't want to be here," said Americans forward J.P. Lafontaine. "I love playing for Marty, (Steve Martinson) who taught me so much in my rookie season that I feel like I can take that next step in my own career. The expectations are pretty high here in Allen and with the talent we have on this roster, we can give it a good run at another Kelly Cup."

After one season of junior hockey with the Green Bay Gamblers of the United States Hockey League, Lafontaine played four years at Minnesota State University-Mankato, where he had 20 goals and 20 assists for 40 points in the 2013-2014 season, his best numbers in college.

Lafontaine is the third player announced by the Americans this off-season, joining Chad Costello and Riley Gill on the signed roster for the 2016-2017 campaign.

The four-time champions open the regular season at home against arch rival and Mountain Division opponent, the Missouri Mavericks, on Saturday, October 15th at 7:05 PM. That will also be banner raising night at Allen Event Center, as the Americans will hang their second straight Kelly Cup Banner in the rafters.
