High Desert Mavericks News Release

In a game that was more like a home run derby at times, the Mavericks belted five homers to overcome an early deficit and power past the Lake Elsinore Storm 11-5 Friday night at Mavericks Stadium.

Both teams combined for nine home runs, most of them coming early in the game.

Vince Belnome started it off with a two-run homer in the second inning, and Jaff Decker added a solo shot in third to give Lake Elsinore a 3-0 lead.

After going 88 games without a homer, Edilio Colina hit a home run for the second straight night in the bottom of the third to get the Mavs on the board.

The Storm got the run back the next inning when Belnome connected on his second homer to make it 4-1.

The Mavs outscored the Storm 10-1 for the remainder of the game. Rich Poythress homered in the fourth, and Kyle Seager knocked an RBI single in the fifth to pull the Mavs within one.

With two outs in the fifth, Johermyn Chavez and Eddy Martinez- Esteve hit back-to-back home runs, each out to center field to give the Mavs their first lead.

Trevor Coleman hit the fifth and final home run of the night for the Mavs in the sixth, a two-run line drive to right field that resulted in a 7-4 lead.

Ryan Skube took the first pitch of the seventh deep out of the yard for what ended up being the final run and hit of the night for the Storm to make it 7-5.

The Mavs added three in the seventh with RBI's by Chavez, Poythress, and Denny Almonte. One more followed in the eighth to wrap up the scoring.

It isn't too often a pitcher can allow four home runs and still earn a win, but that's what happened to Andrew Carraway (9-6). The Mavs starting pitcher went six-plus innings, surrendering five runs, all on homers. He walked two and struck out one.

Making his first appearance at Mavericks Stadium, Storm pitcher Rob Musgrave also allowed four homers over his 4.2 innings. Musgrave (2-3) allowed five runs and eight hits with four strikeouts and no walks.

The Mavs will look to take a second straight from the Storm Saturday night 7:05 p.m. Come join the Maverick for Red, White, & Blue Night and a fireworks show after the game. All active/retired military members, in addition to any public service officers can receive $1 off any tickets they purchase. For tickets, call 246-MAVS or order online at www.hdmavs.com.
