San Jose Giants News Release

Modesto's Juan Nicasio limited the Giants to a single run over eight innings as the Nuts earned a 6-1 victory over the San Jose Giants on Friday night in front of a sellout crowd of 5,585 fans at Municipal Stadium. Nicasio struck out eight and walked none during his stint on the mound while the Nuts went ahead for good on Johnny Bowden's solo home run in the top of the seventh. The loss drops San Jose's overall record to 65-52.

San Francisco Giants pitcher Jeremy Affeldt tossed a scoreless top of the first inning on a rehabilitation assignment. Affeldt allowed two hits, but struck out Joe Sanders with runners on second and third to end the inning.

Kyle Woodruff (1-2) suffered the loss for the Giants after working six innings of long relief and allowing two runs (both earned) on four hits. Woodruff struck out three and walked none.

San Jose trailed by a 1-0 margin in the bottom of the sixth when Joel Weeks singled with one out. Juan Perez followed with a single up the middle and when center fielder Tim Wheeler mishandled the ball for an error, Weeks advanced to third and Perez took second. Wendell Fairley followed with a sacrifice fly to center plating Weeks with the tying run. Nicasio then struck out Francisco Peguero to finish the inning and strand the potential go-ahead run at second base.

Modesto reclaimed the lead in the top of the seventh when Bowden connected for a two-out, solo homer to deep right center field.

The Nuts then broke the game open with two runs each in the eighth and ninth innings. In the top of the eighth against Eric Stolp, Erik Wetzel led off with a single, stole second and scored on Thomas Field's one-out single. Ben Paulsen followed with a triple into the right field corner plating Field to make it 4-1.

In the top of the ninth, Scott Nestor issued consecutive walks to Scott Robinson and Bowden to begin the frame with both runners eventually scoring. Robinson came home on a wild pitch while Bowden scored the final run of the night on Wheeler's one-out double.

Nicasio faced just one batter over the minimum during the first five innings and retired seven consecutive Giants batters after surrendering Perez's single in the bottom of the sixth. Kurt Yacko then pitched around a leadoff double from Fairley in the bottom of the ninth inning to finish the game.

Weeks (2-for-3) was only San Jose player to record a multi-hit game.
