San Jose Giants News Release
Modesto's Joe Sanders hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the top of the sixth inning while Nuts relievers held San Jose scoreless over the final five frames in a 6-4 victory over the Giants on Saturday evening at Municipal Stadium. Johnny Monell hit his team-leading 16th home run of the season, but San Jose was unable to avoid their second straight loss in the series. The defeat drops the Giants' overall record to 65-53.
Dan Runzler started on the mound for San Jose and tossed a perfect top of the first inning during his rehabilitation assignment. Runzler retired Jimmy Cesario on a groundout to begin the contest before recording consecutive strikeouts of Tim Wheeler and Thomas Field to finish the inning.
Francisco Peguero (2-for-4), Jose Flores (2-for-4) and James Simmons (2-for-3, 2B, RBI) each finished with two hits to lead the Giants offensive attack. San Jose out-hit Modesto by a 10-9 margin.
The Giants took a 4-1 lead into the top of the sixth inning before Modesto tallied four runs to move in front for the first time in the game. Facing Kyle Nicholson, Wheeler began the frame with an infield single and advanced to second on the play when Charlie Culberson threw wildly to first for an error. After Field struck out, Ben Paulsen delivered an RBI single to bring the Nuts to within 4-2. Paulsen advanced to second on the throw and scored on Brian Rike's two-out, RBI single into right. Sanders followed with a two-run homer to deep left giving Modesto a 5-4 lead.
Nicholson (7-9), who entered the game to begin the top of the second, suffered the loss after yielding five runs (all earned) on eight hits over 4 2/3 innings. The right-hander struck out a season-high eight and walked none. Nicholson was removed from the game after surrendering Sanders' go-ahead home run.
The Nuts extended their lead to 6-4 in the top of the ninth inning as Cesario came through with a one-out, RBI single against Jason Stoffel.
Kenny Durst (9-6) was credited with the victory out of the Modesto bullpen after tossing 3 2/3 scoreless innings with two hits allowed. Durst struck out two and walked none. Casey Weathers earned his second save of the year with two shutout innings to finish the game. With Modesto ahead 5-4 in the bottom of the eighth, Weathers allowed a two-out single to Flores before issuing a walk to Monell putting the potential go-ahead run on base. However, Weathers recovered to strikeout Culberson on three pitches to end the inning. The Nuts reliever then struck out a pair in a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth to seal the Modesto victory.
The Giants took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Peguero and Flores delivered consecutive one-out singles before Monell walked to load the bases. Nuts starter Josh Sullivan then uncorked a wild pitch plating Peguero before Culberson grounded out to score Flores.
Modesto cut the lead in half with a single run in the top of the third as Sanders led off with a double and scored two batters later on Beau Seabury's single into left. Monell then increased the San Jose lead to 3-1 with a line drive solo homer to deep right in the bottom of the third. The Giants moved in front by a 4-1 margin in the fourth as Drew Biery and Michael Sandoval each singled to put runners on first and third before an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Simmons.
San Jose though would manage only three singles and no runs over the final five innings against the Nuts bullpen.
