Mavericks On Roll, Win 9-4
August 25, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release
The Mavs stayed hot at the plate, using a five-run fifth inning to help coast to a 9-4 win Tuesday night at Inland Empire.
Ji-Man got the Mavs on the board with a two-run homer in the second inning, his first since joining the Mavs.
Two innings later, another ball left the yard, but this time it was off Rich Poythress' bat as he connected on his 30th of the season.
The game broke open when the Mavs plated five runs in the fifth. Johermyn Chavez brought home two with a double to the right-center gap to give the Mavs a 5-0 lead.
Two batters later Jake Shaffer delivered a two-out RBI single. After two walks to load the bases, Ralph Henriquez singled up the middle to score to more.
With a seemingly comfortable 8-0 lead in the sixth, Inland Empire started to creep back into the game. After they had two runners with two outs, the 66ers collected three straight hits to score three times.
Ramon Jean brought home the first two, and Alfredo Silverio followed with a line drive off Edilio Colina's glove to make it 8-3.
Inland Empire got another two-out run in the seventh on a Dustin Yount RBI single. However, it would be the last time a 66er reached base on the night as Daniel Cooper and Brian Moran retired the last seven hitters.
The Mavs added one for good measure in the ninth, on yet another two-out RBI single by Shaffer. Over the last two games, Shaffer has driven in five runs with two outs.
Andrew Carraway became the Mavs first 10-game winner, tossing six quality innings. Carraway (10-7) did not allow any runs until he gave up three with two outs in the sixth. He would allow 10 hits, but only walked one and struck out four.
66ers starting pitcher Josh Walter had a rough night, surrendering eight runs over 4.2 innings to take the loss. Walter (1-8) gave up seven hits--six for extra bases--along with five walks and four strikeouts.
The Mavs face the 66ers again Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Live coverage beings at 6:45 p.m. on the High Desert's TALK 960 and www.talk960.com.
