Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Bakersfield, CA - The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes played a little long ball on Tuesday night, winning their fourth straight game on the current road trip with a 4-2 win over the Bakersfield Blaze at Sam Lynn Ballpark.

Dillon Baird and Luis Jimenez had back-to-back homers to rescue the Quakes from a 2-1 seventh-inning deficit, while Jon Townsend provided an important insurance blast in the ninth, helping the Quakes stay tied for first place in the second-half standings.

Quakes' starter Kyle Hurst was solid for a second straight start, no-hitting the Blaze through four innings.

Baird helped to give Hurst the lead, as he doubled to open the fifth, then scored on Richard Cates' sac fly, making it a 1-0 lead for the Quakes.

Hurst (3-3) allowed three consecutive hits to open the fifth though, with the third hit driving home a pair, as Jacob Kaase's double made it a 2-1 advantage for the Blaze.

Baird answered for Rancho Cucamonga in the seventh, as he blasted a one-out solo homer to straight-away center field, tying the game at 2-2. Blaze starter Danny Gutierrez (0-4) faced just one more batter, surrendering yet another homer, as Jimenez pulled one out of the yard to left, putting the Quakes ahead to stay at 3-2. The homer for Baird is his 12th, while Jimenez now has ten.

Townsend's two-out solo shot in the ninth off of Shane Zegarac made it a 4-2 lead for the Quakes, giving Townsend a career-high six on the year.

That extra run was important, as the bullpen got into a jam in the ninth. Lefthander Matt Meyer, who got the last out of the eighth, opened the ninth against left-handed hitting Tommy Mendonca. The lefty-lefty strategy didn't work though, as Mendonca singled to right field. That would bring closer Eddie McKiernan out of the pen for the Quakes. McKiernan got Chris Gradoville to line out for the first out of the inning, but then surrendered a double off the wall to Mike Bianucci, putting runners at second and third with one out. The Quakes elected to walk left-handed hitting Jacob Kaase intentionally, setting up a match-up against right-handed hitting Vin DiFazio. DiFazio, who came on as a defensive replacement in the top of the ninth, promptly grounded into a 6-4-3 double-play to end the game, giving McKiernan his 25th save of the year.

The win for the Quakes (30-27, 69-58) keeps them in a three-way tie for first place in the South Division. Rancho Cucamonga looks for their fifth straight win on Wednesday night, as they send Manny Flores (5-8) to the mound against Bakersfield's Joe Wieland at 7:15pm.

The Quakes return to The Epicenter, opening the final home stand of the regular season on Friday, August 27th. Friday night is First Responder's Night, as well as another $1 Family Feast Night, as fans will enjoy $1 Hot Dogs, $1 Coca-Cola Products and $1 Ice Cream Sandwiches, thanks to KFROG 95.1.
