JetHawks Go Ten Innings for First Ever No-Hitter

August 25, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
Lancaster JetHawks News Release

(LAKE ELSINORE, CA) - The number of improbabilities in the JetHawks recording their first franchise no-hitter Wednesday night were many. A starter coming off the disabled list, a depleted bullpen, a trip to extra innings, and the need to defeat the league's top closer were all overcome as the JetHawks did not allow a single hit in a 3-1 win over Lake Elsinore at the Diamond.

It all started with the performance of Lancaster starter Robert Donovan. In his first outing after a stint on the disabled list, Donovan dazzled and took a perfect game into the sixth inning. He led 1-0 thanks to a solo home run by David Flores in the fifth inning. Donovan finally walked two men before reaching his allotted pitch count and leaving the game. However, Edwin Walker struck out Cole Figueroa to strand the runners.

After another scoreless, hitless frame by Walker in the seventh, disaster struck in the eighth. The leadoff batter walked against reliever David Berner. The next two men tried to bunt, but Berner made a pair of errant throws, allowing the runners to reach and the tying run to score. David Carpenter came into the game with two men on and no one out, but got a key strikeout and a double play to keep the game tied. He added another scoreless frame in the ninth without allowing a hit to force extra innings.

All Star closer Brad Brach, who has already set the California League saves record with only one loss this season, pitched the ninth and the tenth innings for the Storm. With one out in the tenth, Jonathan Villar hit a slow bouncer to shortstop for an infield single and Flores cashed in with a RBI double to left to put Lancaster back into the lead. Bryce Lane added a run-scoring double to give the Lancaster lead some padding.

Jose Trinidad became the JetHawks fourth reliever. He allowed one walk in the tenth inning, but a strikeout and a pair of groundouts closed the game and the first no-hitter in franchise history. Carpenter earned his first win and Trinidad his first save since joining the JetHawks.

Lancaster had previously recorded four one-hitters.

The JetHawks series concludes Thursday night in Lake Elsinore. Kyle Greenwalt (7-6) will pitch for Lancaster against Anthony Bass (7-7) of the Storm. The game begins at 7:05 and will be broadcast live online at JetHawks.com/CSN and on radio at NewsTalk 1380. Coverage begins with the JetHawks Pre-Game Show at 7:00.
