Kansas City Mavericks News Release
WICHITA, Kansas - The Missouri Mavericks shutout the Wichita Thunder, 2-0, Saturday night at Kansas Coliseum for the team's second win in as many nights over the Thunder. After allowing just one goal Friday night, Mavericks' goaltender Doug Groenestege stopped all 21 shots faced for his first shutout of the season. Forward Chad Hinz provided all of the offense in the game and scored both goals for the Mavericks who have just two games left on the team's nine-game road trip to start the season.
Groenestege is now 8-0-0 all-time against the Thunder including two shutouts, and the Mavericks are now 2-5-0 and tied with Wichita (2-5-0) for sixth place in the Northern Conference.
"Our defense again played well, Wichita had 11 shots after two periods," said Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman. "Doug Groenestege stood on his head in the third (period) and he was again our best player on the penalty kill. The guys are beginning to fall into the system now and it was good to finally have 19 healthy guys to choose from."
Hinz' first goal came at the 15:58 mark of the first period when the teams were skating four-on-four. A loose puck came to Mavericks' defenseman Shaun Arvai who ripped a slap shot from the point and Hinz tipped it past Thunder goaltender Scott Campbell. The 1-0 lead lasted through the first period and Missouri outshot Wichita 11-5 in the period.
The Mavericks second goal came in the middle frame when Hinz took a pass from Nick Sirota and beat Campbell with a backhand. Brett Hammond also assisted on the play for his second point in as many games with the Mavericks.
Hinz has now scored at least one point in six of Missouri's seven games. The Mavericks are 2-0-0 when Hinz scores a goal.
Mavericks' single-game tickets are now on sale and the box office at Independence Events Center will be officially open this Monday, November 2 at 10 a.m. Box office hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and at 10 a.m. on Saturday game days.
