Brahmas spook win out of Allen, win in shootout 3-2

Fort Worth Brahmas News Release

NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, TX - There would be no tales of ghosts and goblins at NYTEX Halloween night, but instead of the Texas Brahmas defeating the Allen Americans in an eight-round shootout 3-2.

It was a game about opportunity for both team's goaltenders, Joe Palmer and Chris Whitley, as their predecessors, Brett Jaeger and Charlie Effinger, were called up to the AHL this week. Whitley faltered on a shot at the 10:17 mark from the league's top goal scoring defenseman Kevin McLeod in the first. The goal, assisted by Jason Reese and Lee Jubinville remained the lone score in the opener.

The Americans came out shooting in the second, and it was a shot from the blueline by Tyler Wooddisse on a powerplay that found its way to the back of the net for the 1-1 tie. Palmer faced 23 Allen shots as Texas shot just five.

Early in the season it has been penalties that have caused problems, and it seemed that way again when the home team found themselves two men down for over a minute. But the relentless PK unit fought to keep things at bay for at least a little while longer. As three minutes remained in the game Palmer misread a play developing behind his goal and let Allen forward Justin Bowers creep one by for their first lead.

In last ditch efforts Texas pulled Palmer for the extra attacker, and as they were on the powerplay Texas now had a two man advantage. This proved to be effective when Dan Welch took a feed from Jason Deitsch and Craig Minard with just :36 seconds left in regulation.

Following a scoreless overtime the game went into the sudden death shootout. But, the new cross town rivals wanted to put on a show for the Halloween crowd at NYTEX and had to go beyond the five man shootout roster as there were no scorers for either team. Palmer and Whitley were stellar in net not allowing a single goal in the shootout until the eighth round. Texas newcomer James Hiebert took the puck top shelf for the game winner.

Texas' next game is Tuesday in Mississippi as they take on the RiverKings at 7:05 PM. All the action can be caught on CHL TV. The Brahmas return home Saturday to face the Tulsa Oilers for a 7:05 PM faceoff. On Sunday the Brahmas and NYTEX will host a special Championship Ring Ceremony when they take on the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs. Game time is at 4:05 PM.
