Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks fell short of closing their season with a victory on Sunday night when the Quad City Mallards handed them a 5-3 loss, but the Mavericks 44-20-2 season record is a franchise best.
Missouri surpassed its previous record on Friday, March 21st with a 2-1 victory over the Quad City Mallards, and went on to sweep their weekend series against the Mallards to reach a record 43 wins, before notching one more 'W' over in-state rival the St. Charles Chill on Tuesday, March 25th for a 44th win and 2 points to claim the franchise's first Bud Poile Governors' Cup.
Quad City jumped onto the board with a 2-0 lead over the Missouri Mavericks on Sunday afternoon before Mavs' forward Andrew Courtney could tally a point for his team. Dave Pszenyczny and Eric Castonguay were credited with the helpers on Courtney's 34th goal of the season, securing his claim on the Mavericks ' franchise single-season goal record.
The Mallards expanded their lead 3-1 midway through the second period with a goal from Thomas Frazee, but former Mallard, Obi Aduba, netted a goal for Missouri only 14 seconds later to keep the Mavs in the game 3-2. Trevor Kell and Mathieu Gagnon assisted on Aduba's goal.
Mike Ramsay tied the game up 3-3 at the top of the third period, aided by Trevor Kell and Obi Aduba. Then Jeff Lee stole the game back for the Mallards only 2 minutes later, taking away the Mavericks' chance at edging the Mallards for the first time in the game. Matt Boyd notched the final tally of the contest to give Quad City a home victory 5-3 over the Missouri Mavericks to finish out the season.
The Mavericks have announced their Round 1 Playoff schedule against the Arizona Sundogs. The Mavs will play in a best-of-seven series against the Sundogs beginning on Friday, April 4th at the Independence Events Center.
