Mavericks Fall Short in Comeback against Thunder
December 6, 2013 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks took a tough loss to the Wichita Thunder on Thursday night, falling 8-6 after a standout five-goal second period offensive effort gave the Mavericks a brief grasp of control over the hot and cold game.
The Wichita Thunder put their first tally on the scoreboard only 34 seconds after the first puck drop, taking an early 1-0 lead over the Mavericks, followed by a power-play goal and a breakaway goal that would go unanswered to end their first period 3-0 in Wichita's favor.
Ready to take back control of the contest, the Mavericks put up an outstanding show of offensive talent and dominated puck possession to score 5 goals through the second twenty minutes of play. Trevor Kell sped his way to the Thunder net and put the Mavericks on the board only 16 seconds into the period, assisted by Anders Franzon and Dave Pszenyczny. Colten Hayes put up the next lamp-lighter assisted by Henrik Odegaard and Obi Aduba, followed by a game-tying power-play goal via John-Scott Dickson (assisted by Colt King and Trevor Kell). Tied at 3-3 the Mavericks were back in the game, but far from finished, as Dave Pszenyczny scored his first goal of the season to push his team into the lead (Rob Kleebaum and Kyle Hood with assists). Then only 11 seconds after the Pszenyczny goal, Eric Castonguay made it 5-3 Mavericks to end the third period (assisted by JohnScott Dickson and Saverio Posa).
The Thunder may have been dormant in the second, but they came back on the ice ready to return the favor to the Mavericks, scoring five goals of their own to take a commanding 8-5 lead, including a power-play goal and an empty net goal. Obi Aduba answered back with a lone goal with just over a minute left in regulation assisted by Colt King and Trevor Kell.
The Mavericks last minute efforts were not enough to overcome Wichita's lead, and so the contest was decided at 8-6 in the Thunder's favor.
Shane Owen made 25 saves on Thursday night, but takes his third regulation loss of the season after allowing eight goals.
The Mavericks play their next home game on Friday, December 6th at 7:05pm against the Wichita Thunder in the fifth game of the Independence Cup Series. The Missouri Mavericks are excited to offer fans the new Mavericks Bud Light Good Times Seats. The promotion includes a center ice ticket, and vouchers for two FREE Bud Light drafts or fountain drink sodas. It's a $50 value for only $30!
