February 21, 2014 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks outshot the Denver Cutthroats 42-37 on the ice in Denver on Friday night, but fell short putting pucks behind Cutthroats' goaltender Kent Patterson, taking a tough 2-6 loss.
The Missouri Mavericks still hold the lead in the Central Hockey League, but with the Cutthroats win tonight in Denver, the second place teams has crept 2 points closer in the rankings.
Scoreless through the first half of the opening period, the Mavericks and Cutthroats each took chances in their opponents end. The Mavericks were handed a power play opportunity, but Denver's Kyle Fletcher came away with a short-handed goal to get the Cutthroats on the board. The home team doubled their efforts less than 2 minutes later to finish the first period ahead 2-0.
Missouri fought back with 2 goals in the second period, but Denver was there to answer the tally with their own lamp lighters to end the second period leading 4-2. Sebastien Thinel scored first for the Mavericks off a feed from Eric Castonguay, and John-Scott Dickson brought the Mavs within 2 with a top-shelf goal with a perfectly placed pass from Obi Aduba.
Denver dealt another blow at the start of final 20 minutes of play, and twisted the knife a little more with a 6th goal midway through the third period. Erno Suomalainen relieved goaltender Shane Owen after the Cutthroats 5th goal, but the damage had been done and the Mavericks offence was unable to generate any kind of recovery. Denver swam away with the 6-2 victory Friday night.
The Mavericks get their chance at redemption Saturday night when they drop the puck again in Denver against the Cutthroats at 7:00pm. Missouri will return home to the Independence Events Center on Tuesday, February 25th to face-off against the Allen Americans at 7:05pm. The Mavericks won their last contest with the Americans 5-2 at home, in a heated and aggressive match that ended with 156 penalty minutes.
