High Desert Mavericks News Release

One night after being on the wrong end of a two-hit shutout, the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes rebounded with a strong effort at the plate, defeating the Mavericks 7-3 Wednesday night at Mavericks Stadium.

Through six innings, the game was tied at three. With one on and one out in the seventh, Angel Castillo launched the first pitch from Jake Wild well out of the park to put the Quakes in the lead.

Rancho Cucamonga scored twice more in the eighth. Darwin Perez led off with a triple, and Tyson Auer brought him home with a single.

The Quakes loaded the bases with one out, and Eric Oliver collected an RBI groundout to give the Quakes their largest lead of the night.

The Mavs didn't mount any late rallies, as they were held to just one hit over the final three innings.

The Mavs were playing catch up all night, getting down by three runs early. Auer hit a solo homer in the first to ensure right away the Quakes would not be shutout again.

In the third, the Quakes plated two more. Alexi Amarista provided an RBI groundout, and Gabe Jacobo collected a two-out RBI single to make it 3-0.

The Mavs finally got on the board in the fifth. With two on and two out, Dennis Raben laced a double to right-center to score both runners.

Shaver Hansen came through with a two-out RBI single the next inning to pull the Mavs even once again.

Although he let the lead slip away in the sixth, Matt Shoemaker got some help from Castillo and ended up with the win. Shoemaker (5-3) tossed six innings, allowing three runs and eight hits. He struck out eight.

Wild (5-2) shook off his slow start and settled into a groove before the Quakes took the lead in the seventh. He pitched better than his line would indicate, allowing five runs over seven innings. Wild gave up seven hits and struck out a season-best nine.

The Mavs will have to try and settle for a split in their four-game series with the Quakes Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. Join the Mavericks for a Skidmarks Roadside Cafe Thirsty Thursday, where all beers will be on sale for $2 from the time the gates open at 6:05 through the end of the fifth inning.
