Kansas City Mavericks News Release
EVANSVILLE, Indiana - Simon Watson, Mike Berry and Derek Knowles all scored two goals and Gerry Festa stopped all 20 shots he faced in an 8-0 victory for the Missouri Mavericks over the Evansville IceMen Sunday night. Missouri's domination over Evansville continues as they have had their two highest scoring games in team history against the IceMen. The Mavericks defeated Evansville 11-4 at Independence Events Center earlier this season and the team has now outscored the IceMen 19-4 in two games.
"The penalty kill was good, power play was good and all three lines contributed," said Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman. "This shows we are moving in the right direction and we are excited to go to Rapid City next weekend and test the hottest team in the league."
Knowles scored the first two goals of his professional career for the Mavericks and he was one of three Mavericks to score two goals in the game. Watson started the onslaught on the Mavericks' first power play chance of the game at the 9:26 mark of the first period. He added the Mavs' second power play goal when he banged in his own rebound in the second period. Missouri finished 2-for-2 on the power play and killed all three of Evansville's chances.
Mike Berry was the third Maverick to tally two goals in the game when he converted a goal in each the first and third periods. He now has eight goals in his last nine games.
Mavericks' goaltender Gerry Festa recorded his first shutout of the season by stopping all 20 shots he faced and the Mavericks recorded their second straight shutout. Missouri has now held their opponent scoreless in the last 120:39.
Forwards Todd Griffith and Ryan Jardine scored the other two goals for the Mavericks as they posted their second highest goal output in team history. Five different players had three points in the contest including Ray DiLauro and Toby Lafrance who each had three assists.
Missouri is now 6-2-1 in the month of February and the Mavericks moved into third place in the Turner Conference.
The Mavericks continue their road trip and head to Rapid City to take on the Rush next Friday and Saturday at Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Arena. The Mavs then return home on Tuesday, March 1 when they take on the Dayton Gems for the first time at Independence Events Center. Tickets are available for all Mavericks' home games at the Independence Events Center Box Office, by calling (800) 745-3000 or visiting www.TicketMaster.com.
