Mavericks Complete Sweep With 10-inning Win

May 11, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release

High Desert's Johermyn Chavez hit a solo home run in the top of the 10th inning propelling the Mavericks to a 2-1 victory over the San Jose Giants on Monday evening at Municipal Stadium. The Giants stranded the potential tying run at third base on a controversial call in the bottom of the 10th as San Jose suffered their first series sweep of the year. With the loss, San Jose drops to 14-15.

The Giants were swept in a series at home for the first time since June of 2008 when the Lancaster JetHawks won three in a row. San Jose also suffered their first four-game series sweep at Municipal Stadium since the 2004 season (Bakersfield).

Edwin Quirarte (0-2) was charged with the loss out of the Giants bullpen despite working a career-high four innings. Quirarte, who allowed the 10th inning homer, surrendered one run on three hits with no walks and four strikeouts.

Trailing 2-1, San Jose threatened in the bottom of the 10th as High Desert reliever Stephen Penney hit James Simmons with a pitch giving the Giants a one-out baserunner. Then with Wendell Fairley at the plate, Simmons stole second and advanced to third on the same play when Penney's pitch bounced away from the catcher Trevor Coleman. Penney though recovered to strikeout Fairley for the second out bringing Juan Perez to the plate. On a 1-0 pitch, Perez hit a soft line drive that deflected off of Penney's glove and rolled toward the second baseman Kyle Seager. Seager fielded the ball and his hurried throw to first was ruled to have beaten Perez to end the game. The controversial call was argued by San Jose manager Brian Harper as the Mavericks celebrated the series sweep.

Blake Nation (3-0) was credited with the victory despite allowing the tying run in the bottom of the eighth. Nation worked two innings and surrendered one run. Penney earned his fourth save of the year with a scoreless bottom of the 10th.

Eric Surkamp started on the mound for the Giants and fired six impressive innings with just two hits and one unearned run allowed. Surkamp struck out six and walked two during his 93-pitch performance.

The game was scoreless until the top of the sixth inning as Juan Diaz reached on a fielding error committed by shortstop Ehire Adrianza to begin the frame. With one out, Diaz stole second and then scored when Edilio Colina singled into center field.

The Giants tied the game in the bottom of the eighth as Juan Flores led off with a single before he was removed from the game in favor of Simmons. Fairley advanced Simmons to second base with a sacrifice bunt and after Perez flied out, Charlie Culberson delivered a groundball single up the middle to bring home the tying run.

High Desert threatened in the top of the ninth against Quirarte when Colina led off with a double and was then standing at third with one out after Nate Tenbrink's sacrifice bunt. Rich Poythress followed with a fly out to right field as Colina tagged and attempted to score, but was thrown out easily at the plate by Francisco Peguero's perfect throw.

Quirarte returned to the mound in the 10th and retired pinch-hitter Jake Shaffer to begin the inning, but Chavez then stepped to the plate and belted a 1-0 pitch over the fence in center for a solo homer. The home run was Chavez's second of the series and fourth of the year.

Peguero (3-for-4, SB) and Flores (2-for-3) both produced multi-hit games at the plate for the Giants. San Jose out-hit High Desert by an 8-5 margin.

Notes: The Giants have lost a season-high four consecutive games ... San Jose is under .500 for the first time since after the opening game of the season ... Surkamp lowered his ERA to 2.57 ... Quirarte had allowed only one run in 14 1/3 innings this season before Chavez's homer ... High Desert hit nine home runs during the four-game series ... The Mavericks hadn't won a game at Municipal Stadium since 2007 before this series.

On Deck: The Giants return to action on Tuesday evening with the opener of a four-game series against the Visalia Rawhide at Recreation Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM. Craig Westcott (0-0, 0.78 ERA) is slated to start on the mound for San Jose while Visalia is expected to counter with Andrew Wolcott (1-1, 4.86 ERA). The game can be heard live on www.sjgiants.com.
