THE SAN JOSE GIANTS... open a four-game series against the first-place Visalia Rawhide this evening at Recreation Park. San Jose enters tonight's action with a 14-15 record after getting swept in a four- game series by the visiting High Desert Mavericks. The Giants are currently in a tie for third place in the North Division - 3 1/2 games behind the Rawhide for the top spot. Last night, High Desert posted a 2-1, 10-inning victory over San Jose to complete the series sweep. Johermyn Chavez hit a solo homer in the top of the 10th inning to give the Mavericks the lead while the Giants stranded the potential tying run at third base in the bottom of the frame. San Jose reliever Edwin Quirarte suffered the loss on the mound allowing one run over a career- high four innings of work. Starter Eric Surkamp fired six effective innings yielding just two hits and one unearned run while striking out six. Francisco Peguero (3-for-4, SB) and Jose Flores (2-for-3) both produced multi-hit games at the plate for the Giants.

Media Coverage... The entire series from Visalia can be heard on www.sjgiants.com with Joe Ritzo calling all of the action.

Rare Home Sweep... Last night's defeat marked the first time San Jose had been swept in a series at home since the Lancaster JetHawks won three in a row from June 10-12, 2008. Prior to yesterday, San Jose hadn't been swept in a four-game series at Municipal Stadium since July 26-29 of 2004 (Bakersfield). The Giants' current four-game losing streak is their longest since dropping six straight in July, 2008. San Jose has also lost seven out of their last nine games to fall under .500 for the first time since after the opening contest of the season.

Tough Schedule Ahead... Beginning tonight, the Giants are scheduled to play 13 out of their next 17 games against the top two clubs in the North Division - Visalia and Modesto. San Jose will play a pair of four-game series' versus the Rawhide over the next two weeks before a five-game set against the Nuts from May 21-24. Additionally, the Giants are slated to play three doubleheaders over a 10-day period starting with tomorrow afternoon's twinbill against Visalia. San Jose will then host a doubleheader versus the Rawhide on May 18 (the Giants will be the road team in Game One) while also playing two games in one day at Modesto on May 21 (The Giants own a 7-2 lead in the third inning of the first contest from the April 11 suspended game).

Power Surge... San Jose has already hit 10 home runs through nine games in May after hitting only 10 homers in 20 games during the month of April. Catcher Johnny Monell has homered twice in the last four games while second baseman Charlie Culberson has gone deep three times already this month. Monell, Culberson and outfielder Juan Perez are tied for the team lead with four home runs apiece. The Giants are tied for fifth in the California League in home runs.

Freddy Sanchez Begins Rehab Assignment... San Francisco Giants second baseman Freddy Sanchez has joined San Jose today on a rehabilitation assignment as he recovers from a shoulder injury. Sanchez, who was acquired by the Giants via trade from the Pittsburgh Pirates last July, owns a career Major League batting average of .299 over eight seasons. Sanchez, 32, is a three-time All-Star (2006, 2007, 2009) in addition to winning the National League batting title with the Pirates in '06 after hitting .344 in 157 games. Last season, Sanchez hit a combined .293 with seven homers and 41 RBI's over 111 games with Pittsburgh and San Francisco. He has yet to play in a Major League game this season.

Where's The Clutch Hit?... The Giants are batting only .224 as a team with runners in scoring position and .167 with runners in scoring position and two outs - both last in the California League. San Jose's 119 runs scored are fewest in the league.

Brian Anderson Returns... Relief pitcher Brian Anderson, the 2006 California League Pitcher of the Year, was added to the San Jose roster last weekend. Anderson missed both the 2008 and 2009 seasons due to a right elbow injury. With San Jose four seasons ago, Anderson amassed a league-record 37 saves in addition to posting a 1-1 record and a 1.86 ERA in 54 games. The right-hander struck out 85 compared to just 17 walks over 67 2/3 innings while holding the opposition to a .183 batting average. Anderson also collected 19 saves with Salem- Keizer (Short-Season) in 2005 and 29 saves with Connecticut (Double-A) in '07. The 26-year old right-hander enters 2010 career ERA of 2.59 with 85 saves over three professional seasons. Anderson appeared in a game for the first time since 2007 last Sunday and fired two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

Belt Leads The Offensive Attack... Brandon Belt enters tonight's game with a .389 batting average to rank tied for third in the California League. Belt is also first in on-base percentage (.496), tied for third in doubles (10) and fifth in slugging percentage (.600). Belt enjoyed a 17-game hitting streak from April 12 through April 30 and has hit safely in 22 out of his last 25 games.

Visalia Rawhide... The Visalia Rawhide, an affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, enter tonight's action in first place in the North Division with a 18-12 record -1/2 game ahead of Modesto for the top spot. Visalia is currently seventh in the league in hitting (.261) and first in ERA (3.29). The Giants and Rawhide have split four games so far this season. Right-hander Andrew Wolcott is slated to start on the mound tonight. Wolcott is 1-1 with a 4.86 ERA this season.
