July 6, 2022 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Club de Foot Montreal News Release
MONTREAL - CF Montréal announced Wednesday that former player and captain Mauro Biello will be inducted into the Club's Wall of Fame on Saturday, July 16, during the match against Toronto FC at 7:30pm at Stade Saputo, presented by BMO. A special ceremony will be held on the pitch at halftime.
For the occasion, fans are invited to wear their old Montreal Impact jerseys, while a photo booth station for a souvenir marking this special day will be located in the Soccer Celebration Zone (sections 113 to 116).
A Fourth Player To Join The Wall
The Wall of Fame is a permanent space at Stade Saputo to immortalize players who have marked the history of the Club and who have distinguished themselves in a significant way throughout their career, both with the team and throughout the league.
Players are selected based on the following criteria: a minimum of 100 games played, having been away from the Club for at least five years, and having played their first game with the Club at least 15 years ago.
As part of the Club's 25th anniversary, defenders Nevio Pizzolitto and Gabriel Gervais were inducted to the Wall on March 17, 2018. Goalkeeper Greg Sutton later received this same honour on July 6, 2019.
Mauro Biello, Multi-Record Holder
Mauro Biello, who played his whole career as an offensive midfielder, wore the Club's colours from 1993 to 2009 (excluding the 1999 season when the team did not play), helping the Impact win three playoff championships (1994, 2004 and 2009), five regular season championships (1995, 1996, 1997, 2005 and 2006) and Montreal's first-ever Canadian Championship in 2008.
He was the recipient of the Giuseppe Saputo Trophy, awarded to the Impact's Most Valuable Player, four times (1997, 1998, 2001 and 2005). He was also selected five times to the league's All-Star First Team (1997, 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2005) and once to the All-Star Second Team (2002).
In 389 games and 28,076 career minutes with Montreal, Biello collected 77 goals and 67 assists (regular season, playoffs, and cup games). He leads the Club in games played, games started, minutes played, goals, assists, points, game-winning goals and shots.
He wore the captain's armband for Montreal from 2002 to 2009.
Biello began playing soccer at the age of 5 in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce. He played for Montreal-Concordia at the elite level in Quebec, as well as for the provincial and Canadian national teams. Drafted at age 18 by the Montreal Supra, he made his debut with the Impact in 1993, playing his first game on July 14 against the Toronto Blizzard at the Complexe sportif Claude-Robillard. He then scored his first goal on August 7, 1994, in a 4-3 win in Los Angeles.
At the international level, he featured in two of Canada's three games at the 1989 FIFA U16 World Championship in Scotland. He would go on to earn four caps with the Canadian senior national team, including three international friendlies and a 2000 Gold Cup playoff match against Haiti.
Biello was also an assistant coach with the Montreal Impact from 2009 to 2015, before assuming the head coach position from 2015 to 2017. In February 2018, Biello joined John Herdman's technical staff with Canada Soccer as an assistant coach of the Canadian men's national team. As part of his duties with Canada Soccer, he also oversees the Canadian men's U20 program as head coach.
