July 6, 2022 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Toronto FC News Release
Toronto FC and Special Olympics Ontario announced today the roster that will compete against Special Olympics athletes from the Chicago area, chosen by the Chicago Fire and Special Olympics Illinois. Players will take the pitch on Wednesday, July 13 at Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois as part of the Special Olympics Unified Sports Soccer Exchange Program. The Major League Soccer (MLS) match between Toronto FC and Chicago Fire FC will follow at 8 p.m.
"We're excited to have this opportunity to again be partnering with Toronto FC on this Unified program. After two long years, this event will provide our athletes with a competitive experience like no other," said Glenn MacDonell, President & CEO, Special Olympics Ontario. "Through our partnership with Toronto FC, we are able to provide our athletes with a competitive and meaningful experience, while spreading our message of inclusion and acceptance."
The Unified Exchange Program unites players with and without intellectual disabilities as members of one team. Teams partaking in the program travel for exhibition matches and are strategically scheduled alongside MLS First Team matches, further underscoring the spirit of inclusivity and showcasing the talents of these athletes to fans of their respective MLS home teams. Unified players will don authentic uniforms provided by adidas and engage in MLS First Team experiences such as jersey unveilings and practices with MLS front office staff and players. The program is a key part of the Special Olympics Unified Sports initiative that leverages the power of sport to promote social inclusion and belonging.
