Matusz Shuts Out Red Sox

Keys LHP Brian Matusz threw seven shutout innings and SS Pedro Florimon hit two two-run home runs as Frederick skated by Salem 6-0 on Sunday afternoon in the series finale.

Matusz (4-2) made it look easy, spreading out five hits over his seven innings. The left-hander has now worked seven innings in four of his last starts as he leads the league in innings pitched.

The Keys gave Matusz an early cushion via the long ball.

After scoring a run in the first inning, SS Pedro Florimon homered over the left-field wall with a runner on base and two men out in the second.

Leading 3-0, 2B Bobby Stevens hit a solo blast for his third home run of the year in the fourth inning. Just three batters later it was Florimon again, with another two-run home run pushing his season total to seven. Florimon had just five career home runs in five years entering 2009.

Atop 6-0 with its ace on the hill the Keys were in cruise control. Matusz allowed just one extra base hit and only had two runners on in the same inning twice.

LHP Jake Stevens entered and worked a scoreless two innings to complete the shutout. It was the first nine inning shutout for Frederick in 2009. The Keys shutout Myrtle Beach in a seven inning game during a doubleheader May 12th at Harry Grove Stadium.

The Keys will head home for an important series with Lynchburg starting Monday night at 7:00 p.m. Frederick trails the Hillcats by 7.5 games. RHP Pedro Beato will make the start for the Keys.
