Mattox Purchased by Royals

Worcester, MA -- Worcester Tornadoes RHP D.J. Mattox had his contract purchased by the Kansas City Royals as announced today by the Can-Am League. Mattox is the second player sold to the Royals since the beginning of the 2007 season.

Mattox had a 2-2 record with an earned run average of 1.47 in six games with Worcester. He accumulated 30 strikeouts in 30 2/3 innings pitched and had an opponents batting average of only .173. The 27-year-old was selected as a Player of the Week from June 4-10. Mattox was currently tied for third in the league in earned run average and leaves the Tornadoes on a streak of 23 consecutive scoreless innings pitched.

The Spartanburg, SC resident is currently in his sixth season of professional baseball. He was an 11th round pick of the New York Mets in the 2001 MLB draft. Mattox spent three seasons with the Mets before being selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the Rule 5 draft in December of 2003.
