Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba - The Brandon Wheat Kings, in association with TELUS, have announced that captain Stelio Mattheos has been chosen the TELUS Player of the Month for the first five weeks of the 2018-19 Western Hockey League season.
A 19-year old Winnipeg product, Mattheos completed the month on Tuesday night by scoring once and setting up three others as the Wheat Kings downed the hometown Cougars 5-4 in Prince George.
In fifteen games this season, Brandon's captain leads the club in scoring with 25 points, including a team leading fourteen goals. As well, the Carolina Hurricanes' draft choice leads the Wheat Kings with 61 shots on goal and is among the club leaders with a plus / minus ranking of +10.
Mattheos, who will represent the Wheat Kings during next week's CIBC Canada-Russia Series, is currently averaging more than a point per game during his 4-year WHL career.
In 203 games, the former first round bantam draft pick has scored 97 goals and 207 points while accumulating 172 minutes in penalties.
Before returning to Brandon next week, Mattheos and the Wheat Kings will be closing out their season high 7-game road trip this weekend with games against the Kamloops Blazers and Kelowna Rockets on Friday and Saturday night respectively.
Brandon is currently 1-2-1-1 through the first five games of this trip and 7-3-3-2 overall.
The TELUS Player of the Month award is presented to the Wheat King, who best demonstrates success - both on and off the ice - as a teammate and role model in the community.
TELUS will present Stelio with this monthly award during the first intermission of next Friday's game against the visiting Red Deer Rebels at Westoba Place. That will be Brandon's first home game in three weeks and the first of seven home games during the month of November.
Tickets to Friday's game as well as all remaining Wheat King home games are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling (204) 726-3555 or online at keystonecentre.com.
