Matt Spencer Named U17 Team Ontario Alternate Captain

The Peterborough Petes are proud to announce along with the Canadian Hockey League that rookie Defenceman Matt Spencer has been named Alternate Captain for Team Ontario at the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge taking place in Nova Scotia from December 29th to January 4th.

Spencer was selected 3rd overall by the Petes in the 2013 OHL Priority Selection and has recorded one goal and five assists along with 19 penalty minutes in 36 games played so far this season. Prior to joining the Petes organization, Spencer was Captain of the Oakville Rangers Minor Midget AAAs and was named OMHA Player of the Year en route to winning the OHL Cup.

"I would like to congratulate Matt on being selected as one of the Captains for Team Ontario," said Petes General Manager Michael Oke. "He is well respected by his peers and will be an excellent ambassador for both the Peterborough Petes and the Ontario Hockey League at this very prestigious international tournament."

Team Ontario, which includes 20 current OHL players, will open the tournament with a preliminary game against Germany on Sunday with the event concluding on Saturday January 4th. The tournament features 10 teams including 5 regional teams and 5 International teams in 2 conferences. The 2 top teams from each conference will advance to the semi-finals while the remaining 3 teams from each group will crossover for placement games. Team Ontario will play in a conference with Germany, Team Atlantic, Russia and the USA.
