Peterborough Petes News Release

(Peterborough, ON, June 26, 2014)- The Peterborough Petes are excited to announce that defenceman Matt Spencer has been invited to attend Hockey Canada's Men's Summer U18 Team Selection Camp in August.

Spencer just completed his first OHL season after being selected in the first round, fourth overall by the Petes in the 2013 OHL Priority Selection. The defenceman from Oakville captained his minor midget team to the OHL Cup before notching 15 points in 64 games with the Petes last season. He played for Team Ontario at the 2013-14 U17 World Hockey Championship.

"Matt was a solid defenceman during his rookie season and is developing into a great leader in this league," noted Oke. "He has excellent attributes both on and off the ice, and would be a great addition to Hockey Canada's U18 Team."

The Selection Camp will take place from August 2-5 at the Markin MacPhail Centre in Calgary. Of the 44 players who have been invited to the selection camp, 22 will be selected for Canada's National Men's Summer Under-18 Team. Petes Head Coach Jody Hull will serve as an assistant coach for the team that will travel to Slovakia and the Czech Republic from August 11-16 for the 2014 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka U18 Tournament.

Matt joins a growing list of Petes players, prospects, and coaches who will attend Hockey Canada camps and tournaments this summer, including Nick Ritchie (Nat. Jr. Team Selection Camp); Jonathan Ang, Matt Cairns, Matt Timms, and Dylan Wells (U17 Dev. Camp); and Head Coach Jody Hull (U18 Assistant Coach), and Goalie Coach Andrew Verner (U17 Dev. Camp).
