Chicago Steel News Release
GENEVA, ILLINOIS - The University of Michigan today announced that Chicago Steel Associate Head Coach Matt Deschamps has been named Assistant Coach of the school's ice hockey team. Deschamps will join the Wolverines, effective July 1.
Deschamps joined the Steel in January 2020 as an Assistant Coach and was elevated to the role of Associate Head Coach prior to the 2020-2021 season. Working primarily with the team's defensemen, Deschamps played a key role in the development of several NHL Draft picks including Owen Power who was selected #1 overall by Buffalo in 2021.
"We're excited to follow Matt's continued success at the University of Michigan," said Steel Head Coach and General Manager Mike Garman. Matt has been an integral part of our coaching staff for the past four seasons, contributing to all areas of our team systems and player development. Most of all, Matt provided great mentorship and guidance to our players. We're grateful for his tireless work ethic and commitment to helping our players develop on and off the ice and wish he and his family the best in their new opportunity in Ann Arbor."
A former collegiate defenseman at the University of Maine, Deschamps played professionally for five seasons following graduation, splitting time between the American Hockey League and East Coast Hockey League. Prior to joining the Steel, he spent three years as an assistant coach at St. Lawrence University. This flowed a stint in Salzburg, Austria working for EC Red Bull Salzburg as head coach of their U18 team.
"The last four years with the Steel have been an incredible experience both personally and professionally," said Deschamps. "This experience wouldn't have been possible without the support of (Steel owner) Larry Robbins who has created the premiere junior organization in the world which prides itself on development. It's an environment that develops everyone and my opportunity with the University of Michigan is another example of that. I'm very excited to continue watching the Steel organization and its culture grow under Mike Garman's leadership and I can't ever thank the staff and players that I've developed with over the last four years enough for their support and belief in me."
Recent Steel alumni have excelled at Michigan in recent years. The Wolverines 2022-2023 roster included Hobey Baker Award winner Adam Fantilli (Steel 2020-2022), Luca Fantilli (Steel 2020-2022) and Mackie Samoskevich (Steel 2019-2021). Power (Steel 2018-2020) and Brendan Brisson (Steel 2019-2020) each played two seasons in Ann Arbor from 2020 to 2022 prior to signing NHL contracts.
Nick Moldenhauer (Steel 2020-2023) will join the Michigan roster as a freshman this coming fall. Current Steel forward Michael Hage is committed to the university following his time with Chicago.
The Steel have completed a search for Deschamps replacement and will announce the hiring this week.
The 2023-2024 Steel schedule was announced in June. Season ticket plans for the 2023-2024 season are on sale now starting at just 5 games for $50.
