Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
GREENSBORO, NC - Down to their final out, Malvin Matos hit a three-run home run in the top of the ninth to give the BlueClaws a come-from-behind 11-10 win over Greensboro on the 4th of July.
Hunter Stovall hit a would-be game-ending pop-up that was dropped by catcher Zac Susi before Stovall worked a walk to extend the game. Matos then homered on the first pitch he saw to put the BlueClaws up 11-10. Tyler McKay, who gave up four runs, two earned, in the eighth, shut the door to give the BlueClaws their third win in the last four games.
The BlueClaws have won three of their last four games after taking two of three from Delmarva in their previous series.
This win was Lakewood's largest comeback win of the year, from 5-0 down to win 11-10. They overcame a four-run deficit in a win at Asheville in June. The four home runs hit by the BlueClaws were their most in a game this season.
Cody Smith (0-1) allowed the three runs in the ninth, which were all unearned, and took the loss.
Trailing 5-0, the BlueClaws got on the board with two runs in the third inning. Nick Matera and Jonathan Guzman hit back to back home runs. it was the first time the BlueClaws hit back to back homers since July 4th last year when Jake Scheiner and Jhailyn Ortiz accomplished the feat. For Matera, it was a home run in his first BlueClaws at bat. It was Guzman's first BlueClaws home run as well.
The BlueClaws exploded for six in the seventh to come back and take their first lead. Nick Matera, who homered earlier, singled home two and later scored on a passed ball. After two walks, Luis Garcia cranked his fourth home run over the right field wall to give the BlueClaws an 8-6 lead.
All six runs were charged to Allen Montgomery, who recorded just two outs. The inning was the largest of the season for Lakewood, who had three previous five-run innings.
Greensboro then came back to score four in the eighth off McKay (two earned). They took the lead on Kyle Mottice's two-run double before the BlueClaws comeback in the ninth. McKay (4-2) earned the win with four innings of relief.
Cole Stobbe, Matos, and Matera had two hits for the BlueClaws.
The teams continue their series on Friday night at 7:05 pm. LHP Jhordany Mezquita will start for the BlueClaws opposite RHP Luis Nova.
