
Match Preview: Sacramento Republic FC vs Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2

Sacramento Republic FC (11-8-5, 35 pts) will begin a three-match road trip beginning in Canada when they take on Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 (9-11-5, 32 pts) on Sunday, September 6. Kickoff is 3:00 p.m. PDT at Thunderbird Stadium.
Republic FC will face Whitecaps FC 2 for the second time this season. Republic FC won the first match 2-0 at Bonney Field on April 15 behind a brace by Rodrigo Lopez. This will be the first in a three-match road trip for Republic FC, who will also FC face Portland Timbers 2 and Orange County Blues FC. Republic FC will then return home for the last match of the season on Saturday, September 19 against Arizona United SC.
Republic FC enter the match after defeating Tulsa Roughnecks FC 3-1 on Saturday, August 29. Sacramento native Tommy Thompson, on loan from the San Jose Earthquakes, recorded a goal and an assist in his first match back with Republic FC after making six USL appearances last season on loan.
Republic FC received Thompson, fellow midfielder JJ Koval and forward Mark Sherrod prior to the match on Saturday. Koval put in a full 90 minute shift while Thompson recorded his goal and assist in 86 minutes. Sherrod came in as a sub at halftime and scored an insurance goal in the 84th minute.
Midfielder Danny Barrera scored his second goal of the season against the Roughnecks, scoring off a rebounded shot by Thompson. Barrera has recorded a goal and two assists in his last three appearances.
Republic FC goalkeeper Patrick McLain allowed just one goal for the second straight match, while recorded two saves. Tulsa's lone goal against Republic FC came off a penalty kick. It was the second time this season that the only goal against Republic FC in a match has come off a penalty kick.
Whitecaps FC 2 enter the match after falling 2-0 to Arizona United SC on August 22. Whitecaps FC 2 are 2-3-0 in their last five matches but have been much stronger at home this season going 5-2-4 at home and 4-9-1 on the road.
Whitecaps FC 2 are led by forward Caleb Clarke who holds the team lead in goals with seven and assists with four. Clarke has scored or assisted in each of the last three matches that Whitecaps FC 2 has recorded a goal.
