Switchbacks Win, Moving Closer to Playoffs

Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC News Release
Portland, Oregon (Saturday, September 5, 2015) - The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC moved a step closer to clinching a playoff's spot Saturday afternoon. That's because the Switchbacks beat Portland Timbers 2 by a score of 1-0.
"It was a tremendous team effort by the guys today," said Switchbacks FC Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. "We worked this week to have a good quality game, we did that and I couldn't be more proud of the game we played, especially defensively, but our focus is on the final three games so we can get a high seed for the playoffs."
It may be "sleepless in Seattle," but it was "scoreless in Portland" for the first half of the match. However, that ended in the second half when the Switchbacks' Miguel Gonzalez (#10) scored off his left foot from outside the box in the 65th minute. That was the only goal the Switchbacks needed to win the match. It was also Gonzalez's 10th goal of the season.
"Another great team win," said Switchbacks FC's Miguel Gonzalez. "We are closer to our goal of being conference champions. We still have work to do, but it's big for us."
Defensively, the Switchbacks were a solid unit, helping goalkeeper Devela Gorrick (#1) net his eighth clean sheet this season.
"We came together this week, refocused, and went to work today on the field," said Switchbacks FC's Josh Phillips (#2). "When we play our game we can beat anyone, and today we played our game."
The Switchbacks currently stand in 2nd place in the USL's Western Conference, though several games will be played later on Saturday night.
Saturday's win means the Switchbacks are a step closer to clinching a playoff berth. Now, it's dependent on fellow Western Conference club Arizona United SC to either tie or lose to Real Monarchs SLC. We'll get that answer later Saturday night.
The Switchbacks' next match is back at home on Wednesday, September 9th at 7 p.m. It's back to school night and the Switchbacks are looking to "School the Aztex" for a second time at Sand Creek Stadium.
