Austin Aztex News Release
AUSTIN, Texas - The Austin Aztex (9-13-3) defeated Seattle Sounders FC 2 to close out their regular season home schedule on a high note at Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex .
The Aztex maintained their lead after two goals in the first half gave them the advantage over Seattle. The Aztex took an early lead with a goal by Andres Cuero in the 14th minute, with the assist from Romain Gall. In the 34th minute, the Aztex increased their lead with a goal from Gall which was assisted by Cuero. Seattle found the back of the net in the 43rd minute with a goal from Samuel Garza, but ultimately they would not find an equalizer.
Seattle began the half with aggressive possession which resulted in a third minute corner kick and a fifth minute free kick after a Guaraci Oliveira foul. However, the Aztex quickly turned things around and maintained the majority of possession throughout the rest of the half. In the 14th minute, Gall crossed the ball into the box to find Cuero, who allowed the Aztex to take the lead with a goal against Seattle's Charlie Lyon.
The Aztex continued with aggressive offense throughout the rest of the half, resulting in several Austin corner kicks that ultimately did not find the goal. Seattle continued to try gaining possession, resulting in a yellow card for Andres Correa in the 21st minute. Correa was unrelenting however, as he shot on goal, only to have Aztex goalkeeper, Cody Laurendi, punch the ball over the crossbar.
In the final 15 minutes of the half, another Aztex corner resulted in Fernando Timbo shooting over the crossbar, after he found the rebound on a shot by Oliveira. In the 34th minute, Rocha returned the favor to Gall, assisting him with a cross into the box, which Gall tapped into the goal to put the Aztex at a 2-0 lead. Seattle tried to salvage the half with several attempts on goal in the final minutes of the half. In the 43rd minute, Seattle's Garza fought through the Aztex defense and crossed the ball into the goal behind Laurendi, resulting in Seattle's lone goal of the night.
Following halftime, both teams were fervent in their attack. Possession remained relatively even throughout the half as both teams had a few attempts on goal. One of the best chances for the Aztex came in the 51st minute, as a Mozzi Gyorio corner found Tony Rocha just outside the box, and Rocha sent the ball just wide of the goal. Lance Rozeboom also provided a decent chance for the Aztex as the defender fought past Seattle players to shoot from 15 yards out, however it was ultimately caught by Seattle's Lyon.
Seattle also had its fair share of chances throughout the half, including a 62' shot by Sergio Mota Mello that landed just wide of the goal. In the 66th minute, both Seattle's Damion Lowe and Austin's Trevin Caesar received yellow cards following a dispute on the field. This was quickly followed by another yellow card on Austin's Rocha also in the 66th minute. This was his 5th of the season, making him ineligible for next week's match.
As the match entered its final ten minutes, Seattle increased its offensive efforts with an 81st minute shot over the crossbar by Darwin Jones, and two shots on goal in the 82nd and 86th minutes, which were both caught by Austin's Laurendi.
The Austin Aztex will take to the road to face Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on Wednesday, September 9th, before they travel to take on Seattle Sounders FC II and Vancouver Whitecaps FC II and finish out the regular season.
