Philadelphia Union News Release
CHESTER, Pa. - The Philadelphia Union will finish their longest homestand of the season on Wednesday when they host LA Galaxy at Talen Energy Stadium. This match features two clubs near the top of the table in their respective conference. Wednesday's match will be the first of six in a span of 22 days for the Union. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be televised on The Comcast Network.
The Union are 1-6-1 all-time against LA, including 0-2-1 at Talen Energy Stadium. Their lone victory came in a thriller on July 4, 2012 in LA. Michael Farfan provided the fireworks by scoring in the 95th minute to steal a win.
The Union will look to get back in the win column after tying San Jose on April 30. Philadelphia got the early lead in the 30th minute after Chris Pontius delivered a header in the back of the net after receiving a beautiful ball from a Tranquillo Barnetta corner. The Union were unable to secure the victory when Simon Dawkins tied the match in the 83rd minute. Despite the draw the Union have racked up the points at home, recording 16 points in their last six matches at Talen Energy Stadium.
Philadelphia, as a team, has the third highest scoring duo in MLS. The club has received massive contributions from C.J. Sapong and Pontius in 2016. The two have combined for eight goals (four each). Pontius has scored goals in back-to-back games for the first time since 2012. Each player is on pace to surpass their career high in goals this season.
LA Galaxy enters Wednesday's match 5-1-3 this season. The club is led by the scoring trifecta of Giovani dos Santos (5), Gyasi Zardes (4) and Robbie Keane (4). The head coach of the LA Galaxy is Bruce Arena. The only five-time MLS Cup winning head coach, Arena has thrice been named the MLS Coach of the Year, including winning it in 2009 and 2011 with the LA Galaxy and for the first time in 1997 as head coach of D.C. United.
